Analysis of: American Legion Convention-Dallas: Street photography by Garry Winogrand Skip, Philadelphia: A photograph by George Krause Art is such an eternal concept and part of our lives. It lives on through generations, transcending many periods, and can speak through many mediums. Art is a way of expression, when nothing else can capture, but is something that can be interpreted in many ways. I chose photography—that which best portrays mankind, in that it hides nothing and only shows what is there to begin with. “It is the language most readily understandable to all and our most important form of communication among nations and cultures.”(Schuneman; Koner 59-60) Two excellent representations of this is a street…show more content…
It took me a while to find the right piece, but “truly successful decision making relies on a balance between deliberate and instinctive thinking.”(Gladwell 141) and I knew that this was the piece to do. There are two emotions/associations that this piece evokes in me—an intense feeling of despair and of helplessness. I can’t help but feel exceedingly terrible for the man, and I begin to get a small simmer of anger—of which that stems from the nature of humanity as a whole, our selfishness and carelessness. This photograph reminds me of an incident that I learned of in psychology, in high school. It was the 70’s or 80’s, and it was a case of the rape and murder of a young woman. This case was significant because she could have been saved in many instances, but she wasn’t due to the nature of humanity. Basically, her death was witnessed by her neighbors and nearby residents, all the way from her initial capture and escape and shouts, to her recapture and death. Residents reported watching out of their windows, and looking out of their doors, but not calling the police because they didn’t want to get involved, or they thought someone already called the police. This brings up an interesting question—Is it in our innate configuring that we don’t like to involve ourselves in uncomfortable situations, even if at the expense of someone else( except for maybe those
