Type 2 diabetes: A Growing Epidemic Many types of chronic diseases can have major tolls on individuals and their families. According to Merriam Webster, chronic is described as “Continuing or occurring again and again for a long time”. For many Americans chronic and acute diseases are a reality. As stated by Medicine.net, an acute disease is “Of abrupt onset, about a disease. Acute often also connotes an illness that is of short duration, rapidly progressive, and in need of urgent care.” Chronic disease is defined as “A disease that persists for a long time. A chronic disease is one lasting 3 months or more” (“Medical”). One very common chronic disease is type 2 diabetes. This

First, extreme fatigue may occur in individuals with type 2 diabetes because the body is being tremendously deprived of sugar which is fuel for the body thus causing sleepiness and even irritability (“Symptoms”). Second, this condition can also cause increase thirst and frequent urination. According to the Mayo Clinic this occurs because “Excess sugar building up in your bloodstream causes fluid to be pulled from the tissues.”. Third, increased hunger may occur because your body is not producing enough insulin to distribute sugar throughout, the muscles and organs become depleted of energy (“Symptoms”). Fourth, the condition affects the way the body can heal and protect itself from multiple types of infections. Fifth, blurred vision is common because when the body’s blood sugar is too high it pulls fluids from the eyes causing blurred and unfocused vision. The sixth symptom that may occur is tingling, numbness, or pain can occur in the hands or feet because the body’s tiny blood vessels are being exposed to excess sugar which can lead injury leading to the sensation of tingling, numbness, or pain in the tips of the fingers or toes (“Symptoms”). Lastly, type 2 diabetes can cause certain areas of the body, mostly in folds and creases, to appear darker than others due to insulin resistance (“Symptoms”). After identifying some of the major symptoms of disease, the next important step is getting it medically diagnosed. Medical professionals have
They are two types of diabetes throughout the world but the second leading cause of death type 2 diabetes. Diabetes can come from your family background, lack of exercise, overweight, and Agent Orange exposure. The reason for this topic is that people need to understand what can cause diabetes, and how it deeply influences people around people with diabetes. Family can be one cause for a person to have diabetes but a family member could become diabetic from serving in the military service for periods of time, which some people know it as Agent Orange exposure. Not only adults have diabetes even children now is getting diabetes due to eating unhealthy foods that contains a lot of fat and sugars. Nonetheless, the children are not exercising or moderating the food intake that leads them to being overweight, which can equals diabetes.

In order to combat the epidemic of type 2 diabetes in America, a series of subsidies and social programs promoting and mandating nutrition and exercise for weight loss should be created with the trillion dollar budget. The prevalence of type 2 diabetes in America is rising and has doubled over the last 30 years to 23 million (Campbell). Currently, it costs the nation about $90 billion a year to treat the complications of type 2 diabetes (Hoerger). Added with the co-morbidities of type 2 diabetes, namely cardiovascular disease, obesity, and kidney failure, it becomes apparent that drastic measures are needed. In order to combat this epidemic, the U.S. Congress is proposing to use a trillion dollars to do whatever it takes to reduce the
Type 2 diabetes is a silent killer that often has no symptoms. Diabetes is a life-long chronic disease that affects your whole body. Being overweight, eating unhealthy, and not exercising leads to a lot of health complications that may increase your risk of type 2 diabetes. Lifestyle choices such as healthy foods and moderate physical activity are important for an individual to stay healthy. Practicing a healthy lifestyle is essential in preventing the development of type 2 diabetes.
Diabetes Type 2 is a lifelong disease that develops slowly. Type 2 diabetes causes the person fat, liver and muscle cells not to respond correctly to the hormone insulin, as a result the glucose doesn’t get into these cells to be stored in energy, which causes the levels of blood sugar in the blood to increase and eventually causing damage to the nerves and small blood vessels of the eyes, kidneys and heart and lead to atherosclerosis or the hardening of the arteries which causes a heart attack or stroke. Common symptoms of diabetes type 2 is fatigue, hunger because the body can’t process the food properly so its expelled through urine, increased thirst because the person keeps peeing out everything they are consuming which makes them thirsty,
It is a silent, deadly killer that often escapes blame. It is type 2 diabetes. According to the World Health Organization, 347 million people have diabetes worldwide, and 90-95% of these cases are type 2 diabetes. To make matters worse, it is estimated that around 25% of all cases go undiagnosed before it is too late. Even then, one’s death is often attributed to other things such as heart disease, stroke, or kidney failure. Type 2 diabetes is a serious disease that causes the body to become insulin resistant, hindering the body’s ability to process sugar, and it can be largely attributed to lifestyle choices and genetic factors. Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death, but this statistic is skewed in that the primary cause of death
Type II diabetes is a chronic condition with high blood glucose level in the body which cause ineffective insulin production (American Diabetes Association, 2016)). As his nurse practitioner, I would use the hemoglobin A1C screening tool to diagnose him for type II diabetes. Hemoglobin A1C is a screening tool that is used to measure patients’ blood sugar level within the past two to three months (American Diabetes Association, 2016). The patients are not required to fast for this test. The fasting plasma glucose is another screening tool which requires the patient not to eat for eight hours before the test (American Diabetes association, 2016). Once individuals A1C is equal to or greater than 6.5% they or have a fasting plasma blood of 126mg.dl
Candace, I agree Ms. Metzger would need education on diet and lifestyle changes. Unlike her sister, Ms. Metzger has type II diabetes which resists the effects of or does not produce enough of insulin (Huether & McCance, 2017). Because obesity is a contributing factor of type II diabetes, treatments are aimed at weight loss, diet control, in addition to oral hypoglycemic agents and even insulin therapy. Because many factors can affect the blood sugar,
Diabetes, also known as diabetes mellitus, is a result of an endocrine disorder caused by an insulin deficiency. There are several types of diabetes, however most prevalent in cats is known as Type II due to several factors (Schaffartzik and Tschuor, 2015). Type II diabetes is caused by insulin resistance, obesity, and amyliod disposition in the pancreas (Schaffartzik and Tschuor, 2015). Diabetes in cats is becoming a growing problem due to more cats becoming obese. There are a few clinical signs to watch for with diabetes such as hyperglycemia and glucose toxicity. Treatment of Type II involves procedures of insulin therapy among with dietary management and weight loss of obese cats. However, there still is the chance of falling
The increase in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes is causing huge health problem through out the world including developed countries. Mostly people with low income groups are affected in developed countries (Zimmet 2001).The magnitude of the healthcare problem of type 2 diabetes results mainly from its association with obesity and cardiovascular risk factors. Indeed, type 2 diabetes has now been identified as one manifestation of the “metabolic syndrome”, a condition characterised by insulin resistance and associated with a range of cardiovascular factors (Jonathan 2003)
Today “more than 29 million Americans are living with diabetes” (cdc.gov) this means that about 9 percent of the population in the United States is currently living with diabetes. There are two different subcategories of diabetes, type 1 diabetes which is mostly common in young children and adolescents and type 2 diabetes also known as adult onset diabetes, which is mostly found in adults, however is on the rise in children. “Type 2 diabetes accounts for about 90% to 95% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes, and type 1 diabetes accounts for about 5%.” (Santos-Longhurst, Adrian. "Type 2 Diabetes Statistics”.)
The kidneys respond to the high levels of glucose in the blood stream by flushing out the extra glucose in the urine. Another symptom of type 1 diabetes is polydipsia. This happens when you urinate so often that you lose too much water and become dehydrated. In addition, those who develop type 1 diabetes may also have polyphagia, an increase in appetite. Often they lose weight or fail to gain weight as he or she grows, in spite of having a good appetite. This happens due to the body breaking down the muscle and stored fat in the attempt to provide fuel to the hungry cells. Those with type 1 diabetes can often feel tired, because the body isn't using the calories they are eating, and turning it into the energy it needs. Finally, blurry vision can occur when sugar builds up in the eye this changes the shape of the lens and blurs your
More than three million cases in the United States. Type 2 Diabetes also called: adult
Diabetes is a chronic disease that severely effects the lives of patients suffering from it. Diabetes occurs when the body’s blood glucose levels are too high (1). There are two main types of Diabetes known as type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the pancreas is unable to produce the adequate amounts of insulin, and patients with type 1 require daily insulin replacement in order to survive (Martini et al 2015 p. 664). Type 2 diabetes, which is the most common type of diabetes, is often correlated with obesity. The body is able to produce the normal amounts of insulin, but the tissues in the body do not respond appropriately. Type 2 diabetes can be controlled by medication and weight loss, but like type 1, it cannot be cured
Diabetes type 2 is the maximum common form of diabetes. This is caused by the diminished insulin manufacture by beta cells of the pancreas and an insulin resistance by the exterior tissues (Type 2 diabetes, 2014); it is a disorder in which the body’s fat, muscle and liver cells that do not use insulin successfully. Hence, it causes the high blood glucose levels in the body or hyperglycaemia. Since Diabetics type 2 still maintains the ability to produce some insulin, they do not experience ketoacidosis (Dinneen, 2007). Therefore they are not insulin dependent but may need some exogenous form of insulin to help retain normal blood glucose levels. Insulin is required by the peripheral tissues to use the glucose in the body for energy. Lack of
