Gardening can be categorized as many things from a hobby to a form of sustainable living, and even a profession. There are many types and reasons to garden, and the list of benefits is lengthy. Many people have stepped away from the art of gardening in pursuit of other hobbies, because it can be difficult, and time consuming, but in the busy world today it is important to find ways to keep feet on the ground and stay rooted: accomplishing this task can be done in the garden, and the added benefits to cost, health, and the environment are at least worthy of everyone’s consideration, if not implementation. Gardening is sometimes thought of as something from times bygone. Some people view the practice as dated and imaging grandmas …show more content…
Gardens of mixed color and texture are beautiful to look at and can often be cut and arranged for indoor enjoyment. Herbs can be grown in the garden to add seasoning and flavor to food dishes, and many of them also have natural medicinal applications, that are thought to be safer than using lab engineered medicines. Growing an herb garden is fairly easy for beginners and can be done in areas without a lot of space, because most herb varieties flourish in post, or planted in the ground. Herbs often yield large harvests and can be used fresh or be dried and preserved for later use. The scents that can be produced from gardening are amazing. Lilacs and Lavender are the show-offs in the scent department, but there are large varieties of scented plants and herbs. Stepping outdoors to a soft breeze blowing with hints of sweet honeysuckle or savory sage are yet another perk of having your own gardens. Perhaps the biggest perk comes during harvest time, which can last for several months depending on the varieties of plans you choose to grow. Many gardens contain vegetables and fruits which are wonderful to enjoy in the peak of their season, or to preserve to eat during cold months and add variety to the table. Food gardening can particularly be gratifying and an excellent source of fresh produce (Darnton). Out of all the types of gardening if I could only persuade someone to take up one, I would pick vegetable gardening. It is
Gardening is the activity of planting, cultivating and tending (Oxford dictionary 2015). The origins of gardening, and its fulfilment of a human need, date back to 1500bc where archaeologists discovered ancient paintings of opulent gardens by the Egyptians (Cellauro 2015). Recognition of the benefits of gardening as a therapeutic tool in occupational therapy date back to Hartwell (1933). It provides opportunities for social inclusion which is a central component in well-being (Grabbe et al 2013).

would like your support in an effort to help support our town. I believe we could improve our city by building a town garden. Unlike the Garden of Eden with an unlimited amount of fruits and vegetables. Nonetheless, a decent sized green house that would house vegetables like zucchini, carrots, lettuce and other green products. Then, we couldn't possibly forget our fruits like the grapes, strawberries, and tomatoes.
Community gardens that allow volunteers to work to grow food helps people be physically healthier and more connected with nature. Time spent in nature promotes good overall health and decreased stress. Macias summarizes this well by saying, “As people disconnect from active lifestyles, nutritious food, and the natural world, they become less healthy. Community fabric becomes frayed.” Remedying this is as simple as “exposure to the natural environment” which increases testing ability, self-discipline, coordination, motor skills and agility and decreases bullying behavior. A community garden consists of a “plot of land where neighborhoods can come together to grow food and build community” as these gardening programs offer training and outreach to locals in order to “improve their nutrition and health, supplement their income with local food, and promote a sense of community.” If landowners are open to using their land for this sustainable practice, it can greatly benefit the local residents. Not only is community being built through this co-operative endeavor, but the environment is also improved. Oxford College could volunteer to build community gardens in areas that are also food deserts, or we can partner with people who are striving to build one in their neighborhoods. It would be a good idea to first scout out in which communities a community garden or local farm is most needed and desired by the
My name is Kristen Cox and I have found myself becoming more and more inclined to use herbal medicine for a few years now. I am Pagan and have used herbs a lot in my daily life for spiritual practices and now I am also learning more about herbs for medicinal
My objective as a plant breeder is to improve the quality and sustainability (both environmental and economic) of life on Earth by developing plants that fit better into the natural world and produce more with less. This is not a task that any individual can undertake alone or that will ever be finished, as new challenges and opportunities constantly arise. Towards my objective I work with partners with diverse skill sets, interests, and backgrounds. Among my most important partners, leading to some of my most significant and longest lasting impacts, are students, whom I learn from and also teach.
I have always been the type of person who loves the outdoors. I find any excuse to be outside doing anything. This summer i'll be pregnant and working on the garden hopefully getting a nice tan. Most likely a farmers tan, but I will take it! My lovely two year old is trying to help, but doing more destroying. I am perfectly fine with her destroying because I believe growing up with a green thumb is a nice skill to have. For myself, I know nothing about gardening. This will be my second attempt ever. The first time was in MI, my dad tilled the yard for me, but half of my veggies failed and I spent a lot time fighting nasty bugs off. One thing I remember working was chilli powder, and I will be using this trick again. Lets just hope it works
Set aside a small section of land for a garden in your front or backyard for a garden. Grow your own squash, tomatoes, beans, artichokes, or any other vegetables and herbs. Sell the left over vegetables to a vegetable market, share with your neighbors or exchange them for any supplies or merchandise that you need.
Fremantle Hospital is a public hospital situated in central Fremantle that provides services to many residents in living in the south. Fremantle Hospital is an important site for me, because my son was born there. Every time we see the site, it reflects our experience of having a first child in that area. Based on this, my family has attached so much value to the site. More importantly, the site has both economic and social values, for example, it provides jobs for many people. Unfortunately, it has poor ecological feature. Therefore, I propose having a garden on its roof. This will not only add ecological value to the site, but also provide foods for staff and patients in the hospital. This will help make the place ecological friendly.
There are many advantages to participation in community gardening because gardening reduces air pollution and heat islands, helps in crime prevention, and most significant of all can affect one’s health.
5. Plant tress at distance- Plants requires space to spread their roots in the soil. The tress should be planted at a distance so that there is enough space for each plant to grow and develop freely. Congestion may lead to stunted growth. 6. Cut down the dry leaves regularly- To make the garden look more appealing and beautiful, the owner should keep on cutting the dry leaves regularly so that the garden always looks green. Cutting and clearing the dried leaves can make the atmosphere more beautiful. The dry leaves can work as nutrition for the growing plants when kept near the root of the plants in the soil. 7. Plant seasonal tress- To make the garden more beautiful stress should be laid on planting seasonal tress and plants which grow in summer. This will make the garden more look more pleasing to the eyes with the blooming flowers and green tress. 8. Plant tress in a cool place- Planting tress in cool place during summer can help its cause. Plants could be kept safe from excess exposure from sunlight by planting them in a cooler place. 9. Protect your garden from animals- Usually people do not pay attention to proper safeguard of the garden from intruders. But this small mistake can lead to total devastation of the garden. The boundaries of the garden should be appropriately protected so that animals cannot cross that border to gain access to the garden. Animals
Organic food accounts for 5 percent of the total food market sale (“U.S. Organic Industry Survey 2015”).Although 5 percent may not seem as much, it is a start to the revolution of making planet Earth greener. The organic food market is growing and in order to help this growth generate more interest we need ideas that go beyond the regular grocery store. We need a new concept that will help people become more hands on the food they consume. Two TED talks, one presented by Pam Warhurst and another by Britta Riley, present future systems that will help develop a greener Earth and provide us with more organic productivity. Pam Warhurst starts a program that uses unused land to grow fruits and vegetables. Alternatively, Britta Riley presents an
The environment will benefit from community gardens because it provides green spaces in communities that are surrounded by concrete and high rises. Urban gardening is critical to sustaining the environment for the future. Many of the residents are from low income families and do not have the social-economical means to access fresh food and open recreational space and services. Families find it hard to pay bills and afford better foods for their family and food stamps are not enough. A food pantry was established in the city that fed hungry residents who need assistance. 3000 to 20000 pounds of food are given away to about 200 families weekly. Produce such as cucumbers, apples, cherries, pears, peaches, plums, peppers from Caribbean and flowers are grown.
Botanical gardens or botanic gardens are generally well-tended parks displaying a wide range of plants labelled with their botanical names. According to Smith (2011: para. 1line 2), they may contain specialist plant collections such as cacti and succulent plants, herb gardens plants from particular parts of the world. There may be green houses with special collections too such as tropical plants, alpine plants or other exotic plants.
