Scoliosis, a medical condition, causes the spinal column of the human body to curve sideways. Scoliosis often occurs during one’s growth spurt or during the active years of puberty. Scoliosis can come in many forms, from being mild to severe, where unfortunate cases force the body to live with deformities that can potentially be disabling. From glance at appearance, an individual with scoliosis, in general, usually has uneven shoulders, one hip higher than the other, and/or an uneven waist. If these signs begin to worsen, as a result of a more severe case of scoliosis, changes in appearance become more noticeable. The most common type of scoliosis is idiopathic scoliosis, which can often be found in adolescents to start. When a subject is …show more content…
Idiopathic scoliosis involves a deformation and disorientation of the thoracic cage that accompanies the lateral deviation and rotation of the spinal column (Zabjek). To start off, according to one study done at the National Taiwan University Hospital in Taipei, Taiwan, the postural stability control of idiopathic scoliosis patients was worse than normal subjects in general (Chen). The subjects involved in the study stepped on to a force plate while standing in different positions. For example, subjects would stand with their heels together and the toes out 30 degrees or stand with their feet parallel and 8 cm apart. Their center of pressure would be recorded using the force plate. There proved to be a difference in lateral sway (Chen). This difference in lateral sway may have been due to the disproportional moment produced by the shifting of the body mass center caused by that curvature in the spine, especially in the sagittal …show more content…
The trunk begins to get imbalanced and this will lead to pain and stress on articular joints, intervertebral discs, and surrounding muscles (Fortin). A clinical study done in Quebec, Canada found results that the Cobb angle, which is the measure of the curvature of the spine in degrees, is positive related with idiopathic scoliosis, specially those with thoracolumbar or lumbar curves as well as those with unbalanced double curves (Fortin). As the curve in the spine begins to bend on its concave side, the trunk has to sacrifice and burden the load placed upon it to counterbalance the bending moment. This results in postural alterations. There is so much muscular activity on the opposite side of the concave curvature that a trunk imbalance occurs, which offsets the center of mass of the body, which then results in effects to the individual’s postural stability control. The individuals can be seen leaning more to one side than the
Many people all around the world may come across symptoms of having scoliosis. Mostly girls from ages 10 to 16 get a curve of about 10 degrees. Scoliosis is the curvature of the spine and mostly occurs in adolescent years. Scoliosis may be identified during a physical examination by bending forward to see if your back is completely straight and if your shoulder blades are balanced. During my research process i found out that a lot of people at my school have scoliosis.
After a quick x-ray I wait for the doctor for what seems like hours, when she finally enters the room she looks in my eyes and says the exact word I was praying not to hear... “unfortunately”. My heart drops, she continues, “The x-rays showed a significant change in your curve.” I sit there, staring at the doctor, pale faced and in shock. When you have scoliosis, your spinal curve is measured in degrees, at around a 20 degree curve you would be
Maintain the natural curve of the spine, keeping the spine in line, create a stable base of support with your legs slightly apart, your knees slightly bent. Avoid stooping, bending at the waist and twisting.
There are three different types of musculoskeletal disorders that effect the spinal column: Lordosis, Kyphosis, and Scoliosis. Scoliosis effects the largest amount of people and also effects the widest range of ages. There are three different types of scoliosis and they are categorized by the age at which the deformity developed. Infantile scoliosis develops from birth to 4 years old, juvenile scoliosis develops from 4 to 9 years old, and adolescent scoliosis develops from 10 to 18 years. Scoliosis is most commonly developed in the adolescent stage, it compromises approximately 80 percent of all scoliosis cases (Baaj, 2017). Any
The person posture I will be discussing is using a laptop. The laptop is located on their lap, with the screen about 8 inches from the face. The person I’m observing is also sitting in a chair with a flexible back and a headrest. Even though there is a large backrest, the person is hunched over towards the computer screen. This created a huge curvature in the back, especially in the thoracic region. There is a greater kyphosis curvature within the thoracic region also affects the other regions of the spine. The lumbar spine seems to have a less lordosis curvature as this person is hunching over to look at the computer screen. The cervical have more a greater lordosis curvature compared to a normal sitting posture. The person is sitting
Scoliosis is a disease that affects the spine. There are many people that have spine problems, but with scoliosis a person will have a curved spine. Studies show that it is more common to diagnose someone in their younger years. Scoliosis usually occurs in the thoracic area and the lumbar region. Doctors will look at specific criteria to diagnose a patient and move onto possible treatments.
Doctors may provide a back brace for patients, but most will have to undergo surgery (juvenile). The last sub-type of idiopathic scoliosis is adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. This type occurs between the age ten to young adulthood. Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is also known as AIS, this is also the most common type with the best profession (adolescent). Idiopathic cases are mostly graceful and painless. This is normally noticeable when someone is bending over. Sometimes the scoliosis is not noticed by the patient's parents because it is usually mild to moderate. The reason for this is because it usually develops during adolescence when children become more self-conscious (what are). Congenital scoliosis is the second type of scoliosis. This type of scoliosis occurs in the womb. Children develop a lateral curvature of the spine even before birth. Congenital means that abnormal development is the cause of the condition (congenital). The last type of scoliosis is Neuromuscular scoliosis, this is caused by the presence of a neurological or muscular disease. This is where cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy affect scoliosis. There are numerous types of diseases that can cause neuromuscular scoliosis. Treatment for this type is very unpredictable because the abnormal curves in the spine are also unpredictable (neuromuscular
Kyphosis is a forward adjusting of the back. Normally has a forward curve of 20 to 40 degrees. Some adjusting is typical, however the expression "kyphosis" for the most part relates to a misrepresented adjusting of the back. While kyphosis can happen at any age, it's most regular in more older women. Age-related kyphosis frequently happens after osteoporosis debilitates spinal issues that remains to be worked out point that they split. Different sorts of kyphosis are found in newborn children or young children because of mutation of the spine or wedging of the spinal bones after some time. A kind of kyphosis that happens in youthful teens is known as Scheuermann’s disease. It is brought on by the wedging together of a few bones of the spine (vertebrae) consecutively. The reason for this condition is still unknown. One specific kind of kyphosis is Scheuermann's kyphosis, otherwise called Scheuermann's ailment. A radiologist initially found Scheuermann's in the mid-1920s, and the condition is named after him. Scheuermann's kyphosis is described by wedge-molded vertebrae that cause the thoracic spine to bend forward excessively.
Scoliosis can range from being minor, to severe meaning it can impair the bodies neurological, hormonal, and nutritional systems. In some cases, it can also be a progressive disease; the more it evolves, the more the vertebrae will rotate, which in severe cases, causes the ribs to crowd together on a single side along with the chest spreading apart on the opposite side, leading to difficulties breathing. It is usually first detected between the ages of 10-17 and is very important to monitor during the early stages in order to decrease progression. Scoliosis has no cure, however, there are ways to treat it. Without treatment, these issues can prolong and even lead to the inability to ever walk again. Early diagnosis is an important factor in preventing scoliosis to progress or worsen later in the patients’ life (Weiss et al 2006). Scoliosis can be prevented or progression can be completely stopped by maintaining a healthy life style and seeing a doctor
The examination of clinician behavior is an intriguing view on the situation. The dominant perspective of spinal surgery has developed as the golden standard for scoliosis patients. In contrast, the author was able collect high level studies that promote exercises as a form of
Scoliosis is found to appear before age three. Scoliosis is bent of the spine at ten degrees or greater (Fleming, 2006). Once the backbone is shown from the posterior view, it is formed to be an upright vertical line. Scoliosis are idiopathic, denoting cause is unknown. Innocent person with idiopathic scoliosis have joint disease early in life (Fleming, 2006). There are three additional kinds of known scoliosis. Inherited scoliosis is appointed to inherit natal flaws in the spine, which is frequently related with other physical imperfections. Neuromuscular scoliosis is expected to harm regulator of the nervous tension or strengths that hold up the spine. The greatest shared reasons sort of scoliosis is intellectual palsy and brawny
Depending on the severity of the curvature, different treatment methods are implemented to attack this abnormality of the spine. Although the effectiveness of using plastic back braces to deter the curvature is still to be determined, doctors still generally use this method for smaller curves. In recent years, doctors have been employing a minimally invasive surgical approach for larger curves, one that requires surgeons to only make a few small incisions along the spine, rather than the traditional two-foot incision along the spine. This technique is by far the most radical treatment since the first scoliosis surgery took place in the early 1900s.
A rare type of idiopathic scoliosis in the united states begins at the infant age, where as it begins at the age three, this is more likely to occur in European countries. Juvenile idiopathic scoliosis begins around the ages of ten and thirteen near the ages of puberty and lastly in adulthood, it is more visible and prominent after maturation.
Based on the observation of three distinct periods of climax, scoliosis has been sub-divided into three groups; infantile, before the age of 3; juvenile, age 5 to 8; and adolescent, age 10 until the end of
Scoliosis is a back condition which causes the curvature of the spine either to the left or to the right. Usually most cases develop in children between the ages of 9 to 14 during the growth spurt of puberty. Occasionally Scoliosis is relatively mild and therefore requires no treatment. However, in more severe cases treatment is needed in the form of a back brace or corrective surgery to straighten the spine. (www.patient.co.uk)
