Ionomers are unique type of polymeric materials which have hydrocarbon as its backbone and pendent acid groups which are balanced fully or partially form of salts. There are two methods to synthesis ionomers:
• Direct synthesis (polymerisation of olefinic unsaturated monomer and low level functionalised monomer)
• Post functionalisation of saturated monomer
The electrostatic interaction between cations like transition metal cation, group 1A group 2A and anions such as sulfonates and carboxylates tends to aggregate despite the opposing susceptibility of elastic forces in the chain. The presence of anions and cations and their interactions makes cross link between them which is reversible in nature. The presence of other small amount of ionic groups leads improvement in properties of polymers like tear resistance, abrasive resistance tensile strength and impact strength.This types of self healing materials can be used in wide variety of application such as membrane separation, automobile parts, roofing materials, coatings, food packaging.
Supramolecular polymers are synthesised from low molecular mass monomers which are joined by reversible non-covalent bonds and gets a polymer which have good mechanical and rheological properties. Under thermodynamic condition, these noncovalent bonds can be broken reversibly, its properties are different from other polymers. Its features incluse self-healing property, improved processing and switchable
