Picture this: A fair sized home including running water and electricity with a somewhat recent model car in the driveway. At least a high school diploma under your belt, and if you really wanted to, you could open up your own business with the right idea and a loan from the bank; even if you were born into an impoverished family. Does this scenario sound familiar? It should, because it is the summarized and generalized version of the American lifestyle. We tend to take for granted everything we have, especially if we are born into certain societies where these things mentioned above are considered a given. However, not all countries share the same luxuries as Americans, for these possessions are indeed luxuries for those who were born and …show more content…
America is traditionally known as a Capitalistic Economy, although we have Socialistic undertones. To be Capitalistic means to have an, “economic system in which industry is privately owned.” ("Dictionary.com"). To put it even more simply, we support small businesses. Of course, during times of economic hardships we tend to be more socialistic, which translate to when we are facing hardships the government will come in and divide individual property (or income) as necessary. There are countries out there with a very different view on how to manage their economic system, like Cuba. Cuba is governed by Communism, which is an economic system that “a system of social organization in which all economic and social activity is controlled by a totalitarian state dominated by a single and self-perpetuating political party.” (“Dictionary.com”). Our economy affects the entire world because of the massive amounts of imports, exports, investments we have in so many other countries, and the growing number of U.S. corporations going overseas. Our economy is the most technically advanced in the world.
The United States uses a Democratic federal government political system. Furthermore, we have individual states and Common Wealth’s which have their own laws and prerogatives. Our political figures are voted into office through votes held by the people of the United States. An example of a different political system from our own is Portugal, which uses a
Have you ever wondered how High Schools are in other countries? Despite sharing some minor similarities, the differences between Nicaraguan and American High School education are clear. Such as, note-taking methods, grading system, classroom environment.
With social media playing a huge role in society, us Americans are becoming more materialistic. We are being influenced by people who give us these unrealistic expectations in life and always making us want more in life than what we have. We try living up to these expectations by buying elaborate accessories, when in reality they serve no purpose to us, making us feel empty on the inside. Like Steinbeck said, “We trample friends, relatives and strangers who get in the way of our achieving it; and once we get it we shower in on psychoanalysts to try to find out why we are unhappy” (Steinbeck). Despite all of this, us Americans still claim to be realistic, yet we pay $800 for a phone just so we can be like everyone else. We buy name brand clothes that are overpriced. We pay $7 for a cup of coffee. The list goes on and on. The American Dream Steinbeck relates to is not something someone can buy, rather is it something you earn. As Steinbeck said, the American Dream is “yearnings toward what we wish were and hope we may be: wise, just, compassionate, and noble. The fact that we have this dream at all is perhaps an indication of its
Because my neighbor is considered suburban it often gets a bad rep. A lot of people think that suburbs are boring and aren't interesting. As this suggests, the problem is also cultural. For the most part, American culture and opinion are still created, even in the Internet age, in cities at either edge of the continent. If intellectuals do deign to look at the suburbs they assume that so much banality must be hiding something deeply
Before describing the dominant culture in the United States, we first need to know what culture is and what a dominant culture is. Culture is the life style people choose. This includes language, religion, values and norms that a group of people accept without thinking about it. Now that we know what culture is, what is a dominant culture? The dominant culture in a society is the established language, religion, behaviour and norms that are proper to a certain culture. This is the dominant culture. Most often, dominant culture is the most powerful culture in a country and has the most powerful people or the most people associated to the culture.
American culture has been referred to as a “melting pot.” Different cultures have added their own distinct aspects to society, making America a diverse country. Despite the plethora of cultures, certain norms, mores, and folkways are evident in American society. These ideas are vital to the function and stability of America. They provide guidelines for what is acceptable and not. In virtually every society, there are people who engage in deviant behavior and do not abide by the values that the rest of society follows. Theorists have debated if people are socialized into acting this way and if it is a social or personal problem. The sociological study of culture focuses on norms, mores, and folkways.
The United States elects a president that is both head of state and head of government. In other democracies, the leader of the government is not both head of state and head of government. In the American form of democracy, there are only two major political parties, in other governments there may be multiple parties represented (IIP Digital, 2008). Our president, and other government officials are elected for a specific period of time, whereas other governments may call an election at any time (IIP Digital, 2008).
Culture is a very vital part of the world as we know it today. There are very many different cultures all around the world. In the USA, we have a mix of all the different cultures and and family values. From the original Native Americans that inhabited America to the Middle Eastern people in Afghanistan. These people groups have brought their language, food, values, and customs with them.

Tall tales and legends are more based in American lore and is heavily based on history and the many traditional stories that are spread from generation to generation. In America we have a democracy, which has made our government more directly to the people living in the country instead of something
The author Dinesh D’Souza briefly explains the opportunities we have and the great conditions we live in, here in America compared to other countries. In the article “What’s So Great About America” she hyperbolizes that “the point is that the United States is a country where the ordinary guy has a good life.” Furthermore, the author protests the fact we’re not equal in comparison of other countries. Here in America, we have many items we take for granted. The poor of this country can buy anything in the store and live comparatively well. Unlike other nations don’t have the same advantages as us. The less fortunate in our country have more privileges when compared to the less fortunate of the Third World countries. The Americans, less fortunate,
There are many ways states are governed and many different systems of governments. The United States of America uses a democratic system of government; a system where the common person holds power through the ability to vote and participate in politics. Although this holds true for a majority of the operations carried out within the state, some may say the United States has shares particular characteristics of a dictatorship; a system of government where politics are controlled by a small subset of individuals, rather than the power being held by the people in a democratic system.
There were several distinct cultures that existed within the United States of America during the 18th century, particularly in the early part of this century (No author, 2010). Despite the fact that European colonialists had been attracted to this land in earnest since the 17th century, there were still many tribes of the region's native inhabitants, Native American Indians, that still populated the country. Of the many cultural differences that existed between these two population groups Europeans and Native Americans the most salient was the regard that each culture had for land and its inherent value. This difference proved so influential because it was one of the contributing factors that eventually led to the displace and eventual demise of the Native American population.
This is because there is government involvement in the United States, and so it is not a purely capitalist economy. The government involves itself in the economy by subsidies, laws governing minimum wage, health insurance, etc. Consumers have to pay taxes to the government. Changes by government measures not only include the costs for the government but also by what ever measures consumers and workers take. The US government doesn’t own all the means of production, private ownesip of property is essential for capitalism. A lot of economic decisions and the marketplace as a key role in economic outcomes. Not all economic decisions are private because the government does interfere in the economy in a lot of ways. In pure capitalism, the United States post office would be compleytely privatized, government welfare wouldn’t exist, public schools wouldn’t exist, and there would be no better business beaurau to protect
Culture embraces religion, food, what we wear, how we wear it, our language, marriage, music, what we believe is right or wrong, how we greet visitors and everything else pertaining to the way a group of people or nation do things.
