U.S. China Relations

Diplomatic relations with China began over 30 years ago. Initially, the relationship created economic wealth for both countries but today, economically China is rising at a faster pace. China is investing its revenue in their military. China has spent as much a $240 billion on military related goods and services. (DIA Annual Threat Assessment, 2014) While the U.S. desires for the PLA to be used maintain peace and stability in the region; subliminally China has stated its investment will be used to protect disputed territories between Japan and Taiwan.

Additionally, in 2013 it implemented air identification zone (ADZ) over the East China Sea, which also covers Japan and Republic of Korea territory. Per China’s ADZ, “all aircraft entering the zone must notify Chinese authorities and are subject to emergency military measures if they do not identify themselves or obey orders from Beijing” (American Greatness, 2013). Manu believed the announcement of the ADIZ increased the possibility of tension between both Japan and Korea, which in-turn would destabilize the region security and prosperity. Such a destabilization will call for military action a by the U.S. In August of 2014, China sent an armed fighter jet to intercept a US Navy Patrol P-8, while there was no live fire, the close passes was enough to raise the level of concern over China’s claim to the air-defense zone (Cavas, 2014).
