A Reflective Essay
I can remember well when I first joined English class 1301 I thought the journey would be easy and it would be all about reading, writing and interacting with my classmates. I have done various research projects, I have analyzed readings and also, I have practiced communication skills orally and also through writing in this class. Talking about researching, writing and communication, I can look back and appreciate the essay I wrote on Ubbi Steel Diaper Pail. The work was outstanding and it gave me confidence to face other assignments throughout the course. The journey has taught me how to carry out research and present it through writing and, I have been able to develop various communication skills. To begin with, this class has helped me understand more about carrying out my own research. Initially, I thought carrying out research was all about getting ideas from google and making conclusions. However, now I am aware that research involves understanding the topic given, analyzing various sources that relates to the topic and critiquing the sources. This also entails

I was shy, and had no courage to face the students and communicate my ideas to the class. Nevertheless, being in this class has taught me a lot about how to interact with others. I have been able to learn how to interact with people using the crucial communication skills required. Now I can confidently stand in front of a class and present my ideas maintaining eye contact, ensuring there is careful selection of words, organizing ideas well bearing in mind that maintaining a good flow of ideas is equally important. Communication is a key aspect in social life and thus this experience was not just for academic purpose but it equipped me with an important skill in life. Developing effective communication has raised my self-esteem, which is an essential while facing the real
A successful English 1301 student is not just one who has passing grades, but one who does all their task wisely. When i first started English comp 1301 i thought i was going to breeze through it without a problem, but i was wrong. The class proved to be a challenge that required a great deal from me. It required time-management, determination, flexibility, focus, priorities, communication and engagement. Although I did great at demonstrating some of the traits, there were some that i did not excel at, and for that I paid the price.
I learned many lessons in my English 1301 class, but there are three specific ones I liked the most, writing a research paper, using transition words in an essay, and to attend to class. Most of these lessons are a daily basis and I used them or do them in different subjects without noticing it. The daily work in this class helped me improve these three lessons. It also helped me overtake some of the works I had in other subjects.
During the first semester of English 1301, I have learned so much that before I hadn’t comprehended. This class has teached me to write what is my passion and explain my thoughts thoroughly. The classes I took before were mostly teaching the arts of writing essays in which the not much was learned. This class made an exception for me to challenge myself and try to succeed in becoming a better writer. I feel as I have learned more in these 16 weeks than have in the last two years of highschool english.
English classes are very important if you want to pursuit your academic goal, and there are a lot of things that I learned about academic writing in this semester. At first, I thought that it was going to be easy as long as I kept doing my brief assignments on time and showing up in classes. However, I was wrong, English is hard, especially if you are an international student because the methods of writing an essay are different. Though, I decided to take English 1301 because I wanted to be able to write something that would make it easier for a reader to understand, and of course to make me get good grades in other classes assignments. Also, because I didn’t know the difference between writing a rhetorical analysis essay and writing a normal
While taking taking English 1302 with prof. Innis, i learned so much stuff that was useful to me in college. Every student should be able to say a few things they have learned from a class after they finished with it, and that's what I am here to do today. During this class period i learned how to manage time, stop procrastinating a lot, and finally i learned to become a better writer. All of these improvement made me a better student, and I am grateful for it.
Communicating with my peers has been a hefty struggle with me for years. For me to speak with one partner let alone a whole class was challenging enough. Through elementary, I used to speak in quiet stutters that required an ear full to get a word.
Good communication is a criterion that sets many students apart in terms of traits. This is useful when building any form of rapport between them and the lecture or tutor. A student that respectfully communicates has also come out as self-motivated and is more likely to get more help from the teacher since their problems are aired out effectively. Students that do not communicate can be misjudged and mistaken for lack of motivation and self-confidence. In addition, students who are good communicators are made, not born (Floyd, 2013).
This semester was my very first semester as a college student. Being the first, it was probably the semester I would learn the most in. I learned the expectations for writing that I will have to live up to for the next four years of my college career. Though my high school teachers were usually demanding because I was in the Honors English section throughout high school, writing in college has still ?raised the bar? for me. Also, in high school, we would have weeks to pick a topic, create a thesis, outline the paper, write the paper, and then revise the paper. In college, the time restraints are not quite as lenient. I?ve had to learn to manage my time and be more productive with what free moments I
In the beginning, I felt as this English course was just another typical course with the purpose of allowing students to write more essays without the use of creativity and acuity. However, as I ventured deep into the course, I found my original opinion to be biased. Throughout my spiritual journey in ENGL 1304, I not only learned many concepts and new ideas along the way, but I was also able to connect with all my readings. From researching my online sources to constructing a coherent argument, I grasp the process of communicating my voice for each assignment through careful observation and visualization. As a result, I was able to write my essays in a more personal manner. It also led me to stray away from the concept of “just writing anything
Developing strong interpersonal skills has been an important subject for me since middle school. Coming into high school, I was a very shy, insecure girl who only had about one or two friends. As a freshman, I felt that it was time for me to break out of my shell if I wanted to get anywhere in life. I firmly believe that joining the Kempner High School Student Council has been the most positive influence on my life. Considering my lifetime goals, overcoming my fear of communicating with new people was something that needed to happen.
Being a student, I learned this year that communication, not only with other students but with your teachers is key in order to be successful. This doesn’t just apply to missing something important one day in class, but even if you are the slightest bit confused on a new concept it is nice to get another explanation of the material from the teacher to make sure you are completely confident in your understanding. All my life I have been shy, and afraid to even raise my hand in class for fear that I would mess up. Therefore, I was never able to take risks or overcome my fear of messing up until
As English is my second language, I am not fluent in English language. When I attended my first class, I was a very afraid and nervous to talk with my professors and classmates. At that time, I decided to improve my communication skills. My classmates and professors are very helpful by nature. I told them about my fear and they agreed to support me. They correct me while I am speaking wrong English and explain me how to get good score in assignments. Furthermore, Professor gave us some different types of the assignment like to go service fair and to found out the answer of few questions. I went there and I talked with people at service fair and I got my answers. These kinds of assignments always gave me opportunity to improve my communication skills. Now, I have a confidence to talk with the people without any
Research can be a very scary topic when it is first introduced to a class, and I was that scary student. Research to me was like learning how to swim for the first time with a life vest on, and my heart beating 100 miles per hour because I’m so afraid. Taking off my life vest and diving into this research course has been very rewarding for me. I have learned so much in such a short amount of time. It has open my eyes up to a variety of ways I can start and conduct my research. Research is not so scary anymore. In this paper, I’m going to tell you about the things that I have learned and perfected while taking this course.
Growing up I was one to develop the mental mind block of fear. When it came to anything out of my comfort zone, I wanted no part of it. This problem I faced had many effects on my life and still tries to get the best of me today. One of the effects it had on me was a lack of communication skills. When it came time to talk in class I was the one hunkered down at my desk hoping the teacher wouldn’t call on
There is a significant difference between my perception of communication at the beginning of this course compared to now. Initially, I was aware communication was an important skill people needed to have, but I wasn’t fully aware of the depth of communication. I never realized there were such a variety of behaviors and characteristics that impacted the ability for people to communicate effectively. Once I started completing the self-assessments my perspective was broaden and I gained helpful insight into my own communication strengths and weaknesses. With each self-assessment I truly felt I was getting to know myself better.
