In life, making decisions isn’t easy. We make them every single day. Which shirt are you going to wear? What do you want for lunch? How are you going to respond to this text? But, for some people, they have bigger decisions to make, such as picking a college or choosing to get married. In the book Little Monsters by Kara Thomas, Bailey and Jade have always been best friends. But, when Kacey moves into town, the 3 of them easily became a group. One morning, Bailey was said to be missing. Nobody knew if she ran away, was kidnapped, or just staying at a friends house, which made everyone unsure of what happened to her. The book Uglies by Scott Westerfeld is very similar to Little Monsters. In this dystopian society, everyone has a label. When you turn 16, you go under the knife to transform any ugly features on yourself into a perfect figure. Once you turn pretty, you live a luxurious life where your only job is to have fun. Tally is about to turn 16 and she is more than beyond excited to start her new life filled with exciting moments. Along the way, she meets a girl named Shay. But, she quickly finds out that Shay is very different and has other thoughts about this choice- she doesn’t want to become pretty. Later on in the story, Tally learns the other side that was hidden and changes her aspect on life as an ugly. In both of these books, someone goes missing, but only one of them makes it out alive.
Alister McGrath, from the very beginning of this book, plainly states what the dangerous idea is all about. “The dangerous new idea, firmly embodied at the heart of the Protestant
Pretties is the second book in the Uglies trilogy by Scott Westerfeld, taking place soon after the first book. I was fascinated by the idea of a society where everyone got an operation at the age of 16 to make them beautiful and then segregate them into another world . I really enjoyed the book, and the concept is good but the execution was not as great as it could have been. The Pretty world and the Ugly world are extremely contrastive and Tally’s character has changed from Uglies along with her look. One of the prime features of the novel is that it makes you reflect about identity and what affects who we are. We get to take a glimpse inside New Pretty Town, and experience all the futuristic technology they are given access to. On the other

The novel looks by madeline George follwes the story of two girls who struggle with their body image, which in turn causes them to feel and be invisible. The story begins with the two girls not knowing each other, but silently observing each other from afar. The girls motives for coming together,
In the first half of the historical nonfiction novel, Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, Louie Zamperini endures many hardships in his life. These struggles make me feel sorry for him and the trouble he is in. As a child, he was unable to fit in, his peers considered him “a bad kid”. Louie would unfortunately steal things on the streets, and consistently get into fights with others, commonly for no reason at all. However, the positive side to his actions, was the speed and running ability he built up. I felt relieved when his brother encouraged his participation on the school track team. In a nutshell, Louie was a natural star. His large, skinny frame and long frame gave him ideal running characteristics. No longer was Louie a bad kid, he was a
Human trafficking, the illegal practice of trading in human beings for the purpose of prostitution, forced labor, or other forms of exploitation, is a crime that affects the most vulnerable citizens of society. “It is the law of love that rules mankind. Had violence, hate ruled us we should have become extinct long ago. And yet the tragedy of it is that so-called civilized man and nations conduct themselves as if the basis of society was violence,”(Gandhi). In this quote Gandhi says the main reasons of love and hate are mankind. As well that both control and destroy a human. However, in the end the human chooses the one they will follow. In the outstanding novel Kindred by Octavia Butler. The protagonist, Dana, faces many love and hate situations as she travels back and forth in time. Accordingly, she begins to question whom is to blame for the love and hate crimes. Love and hate are influenced by mankind, both can be controlled and the pair are conscious decisions.
Octavia Butler displays her brilliance as a writer by creating multiple, complex characters in the novel Kindred, characters who epitomize real people with hardships, passions, and transformations that reflect the strict regulations placed upon the Southern society in the early nineteenth century. Dana faces many hardships from the moment Butler shifts her back one-hundred and sixty-one years to a time of slavery where she is stripped of her freedom. Rufus’s passion for Alice transitions into a fog, where he is unable to distinguish between love and control. On the other hand, Butler gives Tom Weylin a depth that reflects his actions and directly relates them to his experiences. Together all three characters’ ideas come to a screaming halt, when they are placed alongside each other and without a choice lives in a time of slavery.

In “Only Daughter,” published in Glamour magazine in 1990, Sandra Cisneros talks about how it’s like for her to be the only daughter in a Mexican-American family of six sons. She talks about some of the struggles she faces. Sandra is a writer. A writer who wants her dad to be curious about her writing. He never bothers to ask what she’s writing. When they’d ask her father how many children's he has, he’d respond with “I have seven sons.” The mention of only sons, not a daugher. This proved to her he was only proud of his sons but not her. According to him she’d also have to go to college but only to find a husband. A man who will take her out of poorness. Since, according to Sandra that's why her dad thought college was important for her. He didn't care about her major. Sandra Cisneros is a writer who didn’t have the attention she was meant to receive. Towards the end she finally gets the attention she desired. She translated one of her pieces into Spanish, the only language her dad could read. That's how it gained the attention of her father. When her dad finally reads her story, it fills her with joy. At first she didn't get any attention from her dad at all, because she’s a girl. Sandra Cisneros makes a great argument on her life being full of loneliness. Although, she only talks about her perspective on things. In this article she only talks about her side of the story, and her side only. Sandra talks about how her life was as being the only girl out of seven children.
Throughout the poem, “White Lies”, Natasha Tretheway was able to show the difficulty of growing up biracial by using different literary elements that include puns, irony, and flashbacks to demonstrate how self-love is required in order to find one’s identity. By using first person, the author was able to connect with her audience on a deeper level by letting them experience what she did by taking them on a journey as she reflects back on her tough childhood.
In William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” the story is revolved around the character Emily Grierson. The story is told by the townspeople where Emily lives. These people are attending her funeral and pitching in memories and tales they remember from Emily’s life. It is through the collective voices and opinions of the crowd that the reader is able to interpret Emily’s struggles. With Emily Grierson’s choices the reader can tell that she is a dependant woman, with psychotic tendencies, and does not take the thought of change and rejection lightly.
