For the science fiction unit, I read the book “Uglies” by Scott Westerfeld. This story is the first part of a 4-book series. The author writes mostly science fiction, but other types too, for young adults.
This book contains a futuristic setting where everyone is ugly, and then when they turn 16, they get an operation done where they become absolutely beautiful. All of the pretties live together, completely separated from all of the uglies who live together. The main character is a 15 year old girl, almost 16, named Tally Youngblood. She is an adventurous girl who loves to sneak out and play tricks on others in Uglyville, but she is excited to grow up and become pretty. She is also loyal which plays a big role throughout the book because she

This is shown in the story when it states “Shay, I never would have gotten used to the idea. I don’t want to be ugly all my life. I want those perfect lips, and for everyone to took al me and gasp. And for everyone who sees me to think Who’s that?” (89). Right now, Tally is hung up on the being pretty and the idea that being pretty is better than ugly. She doesn’t want to follow Shay, who is running away, because she is basing her decision off of the appearance of pretties vs. herself, an ugly. But, later on in the story, Tally’s mindset changes. “She clutched the pendant, squeezing the undenying metal until her muscles, as if forcing into her own mind the almost unthinkable fact that she might really remain an ugly for life. But somehow not ugly al all. She opened her hand and threw the necklace into the center of the fire”(267). This shows how Tally has learned not to judge people and her decisions based on appearances because she doesn’t mind staying ugly for life because she doesn’t even think she is that ugly anymore. Also, she burned the pendant that Dr. Cable gave her showing that she wants to leave the pretty life completely
Would you like to live in a world where you are born ugly and forced to transform pretty by age 16 and you have no say? Well the book Uglies by Scott Westerfeld is about a girl named Tally who meets Shay, a teenager just like her, that decides not to turn pretty and escape to a city called “The Smoke.” This gets Tally in trouble as she is threatened by a doctor in Special Circumstances, named Dr. Cable, that she will stay ugly for life if she doesn't find and return her friend, along with other people that escape too. I enjoyed this book very much because I felt that it kept me interested while reading instead of boring me. Throughout the book the main characters showed a variety of different character traits. Also some scenes demonstrate when the character is applying values either positive or negative.
The protagonist in the book is a teenager named Nikki Maxwell. Nikki is always complaining. She complains about everything to her diary. Also, she is a little hateful. She is crazy. Also, she not mature at all.,She also thinks she is better than everyone. This story takes place in 2000’s. Also, it just a normal town.

Throughout the short story ¨The Long Rain” by Ray Bradbury, the author depicted the ideas of beauty vs. ugliness in multiple means. On the planet Venus, in which the rocket crashed, Sun Domes are set up by people from Earth to make the environment habitable. Venus has never ending rain making the planet seem ugly and gloomy. Sun Domes are beautiful inside with no rain and a happy environment. As more and more days passed of walking through the never ending rain the crew of the rocket that crashed slowly lost more and more of their sanity. Two men in the crew died of their insanity, but the lieutenant never lost his sanity, for he held hope for finding the Sun Domes on the planet. Hope and discouragement are one of the ways he showed beauty
The famous award winning book I chose to write about is my favorite “Before I Fall” by Lauren oliver. Lauren Oliver has grew to be one of my favorite authors over the years from her ability to relate with her teenage readers so well and grasp every ages attention with her suspenseful andthought-provoking novels. This book is about a teenage girl named Sam Kingston who’s only concern in high school is her group of friends and her boyfriend. This story takes place in Connecticut and they all go to Jefferson High School. The leader of her group Lindsay is the stereotypical “popular-mean girl” everyone knows about. Her other 2 best friends Elody and Ally are followers to Lindsay and never really speak up for themselves. She has the most popular boyfriend in the school named Rob who is everything she could ever want but soon realizes he isn't.
Hello, reader today I will be talking about a realistic fictional book called Faceless, by Alyssa Sheinmel. The story takes place in a suburb of San Francisco in the present day, it is the end of the school year. Maisie Winters, a seventeen-year-old girl, tells this story in first person narrative. When someone told me about Faceless, I want’ed to read it. I have read a book about a face transplant and it sounded intriguing.
Westerfield perfectly portrays how we, as a society, see beauty. We see beauty as perfection, not a line out of place, and this judgement came about due to our desire for perfection. When picking up any magazine the front page is bound to be altered to show us how we should look. Gone are the days where voluptuous, well rounded women are considered to be goddesses. People in today’s society see models and movie stars starve themselves until they believe they are beautiful and Westerfield plays on this throughout the entire text. Tally sees herself as ugly because she does not notice anything good about her, until she meets David. When anyone compliments Tally she refuses to believe it as the truth, and it is unlikely that she has ever felt attractive in her whole life. Westerfield only describes Tally the way she sees herself and although it is in the third person the reader is given certain knowledge about what goes on through Tally’s mind which the reader does not have for any other character. At the beginning of the text the reader is led to believe that Pretties have the idealistic life; beautiful with not a care in the world but the reader may feel discomfort with how superficial it all seems. Nothing is wrong with the way Tally looks and the reader can presume that she is quite naturally attractive after receiving several compliments from two
Uglies is a novel placed in the future. The outline of the story is that a young girl named Tally is 15, going on 16. She is about to go through a pretty serious cosmetic surgery to make her “pretty.” Then, after she gets this surgery she can be on the pretty side of town with her friend Peris. On the pretty side of town is where the grass could be considered greener, it’s fun and carefree without a worry in the world. Tally and Shay are still unsure about undergoing the procedure just to become pretty, Shay thinks there is more to life than just being a pretty face and a dull personality. While Tally and Shay ponder becoming pretty, Shay decides to run off to the smoke to get away from the stress of the situation. While Shay is in the smoke, Tally is forced to run away as well to find her.
How they start of perfectly normal, full of flaws, and becoming the idea of perfection. This suits the transition from Ugly to Pretty. For 16 years of your life, you are constantly degraded for your physical appearance, given nicknames of the worst kind because how you look is monstrous in comparison to the perfection of the Pretties. You're constantly being compared to a beauty that can never be reached naturally, so you struggle to find your own identity because everyone is telling you are something that you aren't. So, on your 16th birthday, you are given a surgery that forms into what everyone considers beauty and it is the highlight of your life, because from then on it's easy-going.
In the world that tally lives in everyone turns pretty at the age of sixteen. She thinks since there is a minimum amount time left before she turns there is no need to be worried about getting caught, she thought even if she did they would still turn get the operation.
However, in Uglies the book begins in the Summer. The start of the series takes place in Uglyville where children ages 12-15 live. Pretties and Specials mainly take place in New Pretty Town. Once a child turns 12 they stop living with their parents and live in Uglyville until they turn 16 (Westerfeld, Scott).
