Ever since I had been a little girl, I have had a love for people and caring for them. I like to study them to figure out how and what they are feeling. If something is wrong, I enjoy problem solving to find ways to fix the situation or at least make the person feel better. I am also fond of watching people develop and grow, which is why when I bumped into ultrasound sonography, I fell in love. My freshman year of high school, I displayed symptoms of appendicitis and an ultrasound had been requested by my doctor. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that ultrasounds were not just for when you were expecting a little one, they serve diagnostic purposes as well. Interested, I researched the different fields of ultrasound sonography and had a specific attraction to obstetric sonography. They must have the ability to notice when something is wrong or see the possibility that something could go wrong, which makes problem solving a daily task. Self management is also necessary not only because a sonographer is in charge of themselves, but their patients and others as well. I want to be part of the Ultrasound program because I realized that where I’m from people don’t consider going into a major like this. I was raised to become a doctor or a nurse it was either of those or your family will be disappointed. I looked at how many doctors and nurses my community has but rarely any ultrasound technicians. I also like to travel to different parts of the world and I would love to have those skills as a ultrasound technician to help those women who are unable to afford to go to a clinic to see if their baby is in good condition. A woman should never have to choose between making a decision about losing her kid, I want to be able to help those women that are struggling daily whether their baby has a health condition or even letting the parents know their baby gender.
The Diagnostic Sonography can vary from one to four years depending on schooling and experience. There are vocational colleges that offer the program in as little as 16 months. The majority of the schools require the same background in basic science, algebra and general physics. The students must be able to demonstrate the capacity to pass all these requirements before they can commence on their actual diagnostic training. Most sonographers work day shifts, or on call at night, and on the weekends for emergencies. The majority of the sonography field is females, but there is growth in the male interest. Sonographers are usually middle aged, healthy, caring, and tough. Sonographer is exposed to many health risks(high-frequency ultrasound waves) as they go throughout their day on the job. Sonographers have duties that they have to complete with a patient before doing any procedure. At the beginning of a session, the Ultrasound technician explains the procedure to their patient as well as programming and adjusting the scanner for the specific procedure(study). Depending on if the specific procedure is an image or a video recording of the ultrasound images will depend on what the sonographer will do next(study). The required training and education for entry-level positions in diagnostic medical sonography is generally obtained through an associate’s degree, preferably with an accredited institute. Bachelor’s degrees are also available, as well as one-year certificate programs for professionals expanding their current healthcare degree. Most employers require education from an accredited program because of their allotment for clinical training and studies including medical terminology courses and detailed instruction on interpreting ultrasound images. The medical field is continually advancing and is a very interesting and intriguing field of study. There are a wide variety of job opportunities offered throughout the health care that one could pursue. Jobs in this field can be found in a metropolitan area, nonmetropolitan area, urban area, as well as in a rural area. I’ve take much time to learn research this field and I feel that I’ve come to understand the many traits and skills needed to succeed as an Ultrasound Technician. On top on having a basic understanding of what sonography is, you must be detail oriented, compassionate, and willing to learn new information as the field grows and evolves. Although there are many traits and skills needed, I think that these are the most important.
Getting a good, quality education is very important to me. I feel that one should take every available opportunity there is to further his/her education. Therefore, I believe it is necessary that I step up and do whatever it takes to be that example. With the knowledge I obtain from my college degree, I plan to give back to my community in various ways by participating in the field of medical sonography.
This has led to pushing away many people from all fields of medical science without realizing there are many fields within medical science which do not require the individual to interact or treat or care for patients. Ultrasound is one of these fields which only require the Sonographer to interact with patients and perform the ultrasound scans. While the profession does not require an individual to participate in the care or treatment, but Sonographer may be required to perform an emergency diagnostic scan of a patient in critical condition. With this in mind, it still important to inform candidates they may be expected to experience such situations which may involve a patient experiencing pain or trauma.
There isn't anything that is quite as exciting as being pregnant. However, getting to see your baby inside you womb is also a pretty exciting experience. During an ultrasound, doctors are able to learn quite a bit about the baby. They can see how the baby is growing and even determine the gender of the baby.
