Unbridled technology
There is no doubt that technology has advanced tremendously in the last half-century. Technology has provided extraordinary improvements to our world; being an endless source of entertainment and nonstop communication anywhere at any time. But are these technological advancements a good thing? The youth of today are constantly immersed in these technological advancements whether through cell phones, gaming systems, or laptops. As technology continues to advance it is negatively affecting our health, communication skills, and the education of youth.
Technology has indeed made a tremendous impact to society; health problems caused by modern technology have evolved into an important problem, especially

Furthermore, as communication and writing skills diminish our school performance begins to be affected. The entertainment of mobile devices distracts nearly every student in the classroom whether it is texting, or playing games, or surfing the net. Mobile devices also play a big role in communication by making it possible for students to easily communicate with each other when they should not be. The power to communicate with virtually anyone is a major distraction. Some teens are so attached to their technological devices they sleep with phones on and wake up to answer text messages they get at night. When kids have cell phones in their classrooms they are extremely distracted from what is actually being taught. They are looking down and playing their games or going on social networking sites instead of listening to their teachers. With the constant distraction of technology and teens short attention spans reading and writing skills have suffered significantly and vocabularies are shrinking. This relates to their education and their ability to do well in school. Another problem is that technology provides students with the ability to explore numerous search engines for any problem they come across and copy them word for word. It seems that students don’t spend time thinking; they are simply repeating information instead of learning concepts and ideas. When students do this, they do not actually learn the
Many of our students have smartphones, laptops, and tablets they use throughout the school day for school work. While some students depend on their devices to look up the current fashion trends and football stats, we feel that technology has also enabled students to think in a different way. Many students are quick on their feet to Google information to prove their friend wrong, send texts and emails in less than 10 seconds, and get excited when they are allowed to use their
Our young adults stay engulfed in their electronic devices that they are not developing the ability to effectively socialize. Youth have been showing signs of psychological issues that never existed before the creation of hand-held electronics or demonstrate signs of problems that related to loosing something substantial and/or meaningful. With this in mind, today’s youth have a countless advantages when they join the working environment due to the fact that they stay proficient at using electronics that they can cling to the way technology outlooks continue to always advance. The young should not have free range of the electronics however. The time and usage should be monitored by their parents or the authority’s in-charge over them. This could benefit the young adults grow-up with a knowledge and understanding of how the usage and abuse can affect young
In today’s society, digital technology became an important part of our daily lives. Advanced technologies such as smart phones, improved the connection and engagement with people around the world, and easily accessed information throughout the internet. However, many critics argued that these technology are causing negative influences among teenagers; for instances, many pointed out that texting affect the way we think and write, in which I strongly disagreed. There are no connection or comparison among texting and writing.
“87% of K-12 teachers believe that ‘today’s digital technologies are creating an easily distracted generation with short attention spans’” (“Should Tablets Replace Textbooks in K-12 Schools?” 1). As observed at my high school, the attention deficit grows, due to the increase of multitasking between classwork completion and cell phone usage. Teachers often fear a drastic reduction in the control due to these technologies magnifying the attention “epidemic” which affects the younger
Technology today makes everyone so distracted. People spend more time texting, making phone calls, and streaming videos. I see 99% of the world on their phones or some form of technology. “Young people spend about 27 hours a week on technology, weather it is communicating or uploading videos.”(E.g. Web, Elizabeth Anderson). Technology can be the root of all evil. It is the only thing that distracts our youth from the things ahead of them.
It should be noted that not all forms of technology are poisonous to the minds of youth. “One can no more ask, ‘How is technology affecting cognitive development?’ than one can ask, ‘How is food affecting physical development?’ Like with food, the effects of technology will depend critically on what type of technology is consumed, how much of it is consumed, and for how long it is consumed (Bavelier, Green, Dye, 2010).” For example, many parents may have
It is no surprise that today people live in a world where technology is used on a regular basis. Classrooms everywhere with a tech based white boards, touch-screen cellphones that talks back to you, cars that can drive itself. However, technology could be harmful if being used too much that could lead to a serious long-term effect. The sad thing is, everyone uses technology, from little babies to teenagers, grownups and even the elderly. The scariest thing about it is that babies have access to so much technology today it is ridiculous. “More than a third of children under the age of two use mobile media. That number only increases as children age.” (Edudemic 2010), this just proves how much access the little ones have, which is pretty scary. This is a problem today because the usage of too much technology available at such young age could harm the young ones both physically and mentally. An article was written by ‘Psychology Today’ states how technology can alter the wiring of the brain, “too much screen time and not enough activities, such as reading and playing games, will result in your children having their brains wired in ways that may make them less, not more, prepared to thrive in this crazy world of technology.” Not only does it alter the wiring in their brain, but it also could lead them into
These incivilities include use of mobile phones during class, sending inappropriate emails to the teachers and using personal computers for unrelated purposes during class. A new report shoes the approximately ninety percent of students in the United States use their cell phone for unrelated class activities during lecture. Most of the students use their mobile phones as well as computers for time checking, social networking email, games, and web surfing. The behavior has been more habitual and distracting in almost every classroom. Multi-tasking using digital devices in lecture interfere with the ability of students to pay attention. In recent study, researchers explored the use of cell phone use in the classroom. It was designed to investigate how texting affects learning of the students. The participants of the study were involved in different activities, such as watching a video lecture, taking notes and completing tests. According to research study, “the control and relevant message groups earned a 10-17% higher letter grade, scored 70% higher on recalling information, and scored 50% higher on note taking than other students who composed tweets or responded to irrelevant messages” (Kuzekoff, et al.
Today we’re living in a revolutionary world and in the matter of just a few seconds there’s new inventions happening across the globe, media technology being one of them. The internet, or the world wide web, has given us the freedom to perform a variety of tasks from the comfort of our own home. The advancement in technology has made communication easier and quicker, and we’re able to communicate with anyone else who also owns a tech savvy device. The evolution of technology has made a positive impact on an individual’s life, especially teenagers who are more vulnerable to change. We can see a reflection of technology everywhere in our lives such as TV, telephones, computers, cell phones, email, text messages, checking the news, checking the weather, checking the news over in Russia if you wanted to, online shopping, online banking, taking pictures, discovering new recipes, and so much more.
Technology is currently and will continue to become helpful to our daily lives as it advances on into the future. Computers and even laptops are a good means of education because of the portable ways individuals can use them when needed on the go. Though many people claim that technology has distanced humanity from nature, it is still the source of the immense development that people do not notice. Many argue that in our generation, we spend less time with people, and more time on our devices or talking to people online. The lack of communication is one of the top problems since the advancement of technology has taken place. Looking at the positive aspects of technology not only shows how much better our world has become, but how improved learning,
Advancements in technology are creating distractions for students. Students are prioritizing their time with things such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, and Netflix. Instead of directing their attention to current assignments, projects, and tests, they are focusing more on the latest app or device. These distractions are taking student’s time and attention away from their schoolwork along with other chores and obligations. Some schools
With time the mind has expanded and has created things our society could have never imagined were possible. In the last century technology has flourished due the changes in the way the mind works. These new technological inventions have proved to be very helpful in day-to-day basis. Children utilize computers, cell phones, and television to their learning advantage. The way children are developing is very different than children of past generations because of the new technology they are growing up with (Taylor). As the use of technology increases amongst all age groups, there is evidence that shows it impacts children intellectually and socially.
According to Terry Heick, the founder and director of TeachThought, “Many teachers believe that smartphones and tablets, with internet connectivity and text messaging services, can merely be a source of distraction for students as opposed to a learning tool” (Heick). Curious administrators in schools see the technological advancements as an opportunity to change learning styles even though there are many ways that technology in the classroom can be negative. Though technology allows access to ebooks and other helpful sources, it also enables cheating that does not advance learning, but instead creates a wall that deters and prohibits students from learning to their full potential and abilities. Before implementing technologies into the classroom, schools should consider that technology can cause a lack of writing skills, limitations on problem solving abilities, and distractions because of short attention spans.
Schools have not always been filled with electronic devices as they are today, and believe it or not, all school work was done with books, papers, and pencils. Students in the past work hard to do their assignments, and more effort was needed to think more about what they were doing. In today's schools, teachers, and students, do a large portion of their work on electronic devices, with online resources, which is not really teaching or learning. Students need to have hands on learning, instead of learning everything from screens in front of them. While everyday life is also adapting to the use of technology, students should be taught how to go about their lives without it. The excessive use of technology in schools is leading to less creativity in students, less social interaction, and too much dependency on technology for simple tasks, which will make the real world a difficult place in the long run.
Since the age of technology, technology has had a variety of impacts on the human race. While some of these may be positive and some negative, it is undeniable to state that electronics have not kept us evolving as technology evolves itself. It has become a vital contribution to most Americans’ everyday lives as well as various occupations. Without technology, we would not be where we are in current day society.
