After finding out what Hitch really does for a living, Sarah publishes a revelation that causes in the break-up of Allegra and Albert and Hitch got his reputation ruined. “Uncertainty reduction is a primary motivating factors for communication” (Berger & Calabrese, 1975). Berger (1975) argues that there are three conditions that increase the need to reduce uncertainty about the new acquaintance: (1) Anticipation of future interaction, (2) incentive value, and (3) Deviance.
Berger introduced series of axiom that help explain the relationship of uncertainty and eight key variables of relationship development: verbal communication, nonverbal warmth, information seeking, self-disclosure, reciprocity, similarity, liking, and shared networks (Griffin, 2012).
This report will be using the Hitch (2005) movie to explain how the theory relates to the movie. There was a scene in the movie which explains the theory perfectly. The scene where the main characters Alex Hitchens and Sara Melas meet at a bar. Alex saw Sara and was observing her from afar. The words “certainty” and “doubt” have many varying connotations and implications given a specific context. Even though the definitions of these two words are considered polar opposites of each other, there is one connection between the two that is undeniable: both certainty and doubt can be taken with a grain of salt, as they are all merely just opinions specific to the person that those concepts are presented to. Adding on to that, there is also a concept relating to this; the idea that there is always “the certainty of doubt” and that they are merely two sides of the same coin.

The Uncertainty Reduction Theory states that before and during initial interactions between two people, one's first instinct is to reduce uncertainty about the other through various methods. For example, when you see someone you think you would like to know, you try and figure out what they are like through various methods so you can control the conversation and steer it into a path that the other person finds interesting.
