School does not have the extra activities we have like recess and estar activities like our oak basketball team. “It's like you go to school to school and learn academics and nothing else.” (Giaya). In Li-Young Lee’s poem, Persimmons, he tells the story of the speaker in an episodic manner to convey how the chapters of life are intertwined and the impact they all have on one another. This is a free verse poem and lends itself to the assumption of being autobiographical. It begins with the speaker in sixth grade being lectured by his teacher for not knowing the difference between “persimmon” and “precision.” It sharply transitions into discussing the art of eating a persimmon. In the poem “Persimmons” Li-Young Lee leads us on a journey that bounces between childhood and adulthood. There is an undercurrent of divisiveness as Lee recounts moments from his time at school that conflict with the lessons he learns at home. Lee writes “Persimmons” as a stream of consciousness reflection of his youth and his struggle to reconcile his Chinese heritage with his American upbringing. He structures the poem to allow the audience to see these moments through his eyes and uses persimmons to show not only the emotional attachment that words have but as a symbol for the strained relationship Lee had with his white teacher Mrs. Walker. Unfortunately, two-thirds of world’s illiterate adults are women! Since, some families would prefer to send their sons to school rather than their daughters.
Unlike what is the case in the US, globally primary education is far from a guarantee. Every year millions of children are going uneducated, stripping the intellectual capacity of many impoverished nations. No segment of the global population does this more acutely effect than girls. Many societies feel a strong cultural push educate boys but the same pressures are often absent for girls.
