Personal influences and team experiences also affect choice of leadership styles as team dynamics are always changing and a good manager will always utilise their team members so that each person is working to the best of their ability. There are four main leadership styles, the first being Autocratic style which the manager retains as much control and decision making authority as possible, the manager does not give employees any input or consultation. The next is Bureaucratic which is where the manager manages ‘by the book’ which is where everything must be completed according to procedure and protocol. Mangers using this style will only consult with those above them in the chain of command. They simple enforce the rules of the workplace. The next style of leadership is Laissez-Faire which is also known as the ‘hands off’ approach to management. The manager usually provides little or no direction and give employees as much freedom as possible. All power is given to employees and they are to dictate their own work ethics. The last leadership style is the Democratic style which is also known as the participative style and this is where employees are encouraged to be a part of the decision making process. What is leadership; it can be a process used by leaders in order to shape the workforce and workplace in a variety of ways. Some of the different things that leadership can influence within an organisation are personal attributes and behaviours, which can be developed and/or changed in order to reach a common goal. Leadership can also be used as a channel for developing ideas and visions through an organisation. A clear example of using leadership as a passage to developing ideas through an organisation can be seen in Steve Jobs’ leadership style. Some believe leadership comes from traits of a leader, but others believe it comes from skills learned to be the better leader. There are three main traditional leadership styles however many others still exist. The main ones are: Autocratic leadership style, Democratic leadership and the Laissez-faire leadership style. In this assignment, I will be going through two important challenges in the topic ‘Leadership’, and will comment on potential methods of addressing these issues. The challenges/issues i will go through are: ‘Which leadership style is most appropriate?’ and “What is better for a leader to use; punishment vs reward?”.

In order to understand what leadership style will work best for a new supervisor it is important to define the different leadership styles that will be discussed in this paper. Although there are many different styles of leadership that have been studied and practiced, some of the basic leadership styles are autocratic, consultative, democratic, participative and laissez-faire. For a new supervisor it is important to determine what leadership style fits their individual personality and the organization, but also allows the job to get completed through their subordinates.
The contents and assignment in this course has helped me understand the various theories of leadership and how different leadership styles can have a negative or positive effect on followers and organizations. The leadership theories helped me understand the concept of leadership better because it educates me on the different leadership options that are available. Leadership and followership is not based on specific characteristics. Leaders must draw from things and approaches to find the right style. A follower’s attitude determines the way a leader leads. According to Johnson (2011) “Being a good follower means ensuring your boss is supported, but only if he is making optimum decisions”.

Methodology: As this study seeks to study leadership styles, which can be very subjective, it would appear that the qualitative method of study would be preferable. For this body of research, it was felt that more open dialogue pertaining to this topic of style of leadership and more richness of data would be obtained through the interview process.
According to Manktelow (2014), leadership styles refer to the frameworks that describe the main ways people lead. It is in a person’s best interest to study these leadership styles and use this knowledge to develop their own style of leadership. There are five main types of leadership styles and leaders tend to fall into one of them. This paper will look at three different leadership styles and famous leaders who are known for those leadership styles.
