Understanding Library Impact On Student Learning

This school prepares the students for the next step of their life to head to college or go to the work force. The schools want to see all students to graduate and start a career. Another example, “Children sitting in classrooms, riding buses, eating school lunches, participating in school programs are our nation’s future, so we want to provide them with a good start in life” (http://blogs.census.gov). Seeing students enjoying their school years is one of the best things there can be because these students will see have something to get their minds off and just focus on school and that is what public schools are doing for these children. The primary source of library funding for 44 percent of California schools comes from the School and Library Improvement Block Grant. The second-most important source of funding comes from fund-raising activities. In its first year, 5 percent of the block grant was invested in school libraries this shows that schools want to provide anything possible to get a better future for the students. When the schools have an opportunity to have a library open for them during school hours it can help those that need the extra time and for the ones that want a quiet place to go to and study.

The focus of this paper is to dispel a common view that community colleges do not provide on-campus housing and to provide greater insights into the types of community colleges that provide on-campus housing, the typical student who resides in on-campus housing, a guide to various California community colleges that provide on-campus housing, and the impact that on-campus housing has on student learning outcomes, financial gains for community colleges that provide on-campus housing, and an overview of the lack of data in the area of not only on-campus housing in community colleges, but community colleges at large. Besides be adjacent to a major interstate this particular library is nestled between the Hoover Police Department and the Hoover Recreation Center. The library to address such a diverse and large community is a two floor facility with the basement level having meeting rooms, a theatre, and a box office. While the main level has the collections, circulation desks, lounges, and café. The spacious and large floor plans are necessary to fulfill the needs and visits from an estimate of 79,127 patrons and counting. The exponential growth of patrons is value to understand how much this library has grown to serve its community since opening in 1983. The handling of such growth in patrons would not be possible without the help of the Jefferson County Library Cooperative and the Library Board, which is open to the public. On October 28th, 2015, Lone Star College of Kingwood hosted an event called the human library. It was held on campus for students who were interested to participate. The human library was created for students to gain knowledge of obstacles individuals experienced in life, such as living in the south as a black woman in the 1950’s, being homeless, and being a religion that is frowned upon in society. The purpose of the event is to teach students about other cultures, social classes, and hardship. The speakers inform our generation their own personal experience rather than information in a text book.

A final critical element in support of student and faculty learning focuses on library instruction and research assistance. The realm of available information in all shapes and sizes is particularly overwhelming for the average undergraduate student. Librarians and staff assist students with basic and in depth research questions on what resources are available on specific topics and how to select the right ones. The library I volunteered at is run by the high school, Dr. Norman Bethune Collegiate Institute (C.I.). The school was founded in 1979 and was named after Norman Bethune; a well-known Canadian doctor. He was best known for his services during World War I and his dedication to helping the poor in Canada. Moreover, over these past few years, the school has prospered beautifully and has had many renovations and changes. For example, two years ago, the school’s library had a huge makeover. The library was given new furniture to allow to have students a better working space. Similarly, the library moved shelves around in order to make it more convenient for everyone to access books. Ultimately, Dr. Norman Bethune C.I. has it in their best interest to provide students with the tools they need to succeed in education. In other words, the school displays good citizenship by assisting their students.

I have experience teaching first-year undergrads up through doctoral students in settings including traditional library instruction, online ELMS courses, and a for-credit course. As the director of the UMD Libraries Research and Teaching Fellowship, I have first-hand experience supporting MLS students as they learn to teach, provide reference support, and explore their scholarly interests. The more knowledge an individual acquires, the more opportunities for growth are at hand. Not only this applies to everyday life lesson, but it is very applicable for all scholars of all ages. The library is a public resourceful place of where anyone has access to learning about literature, art, mathematics, etc. The modern age of technology has expanded the resources to unlimited online databases for any individual to search any topic. The library at Prince George’s County Community College offers available online, search databases for peer-reviewed scholarly journals, e-books, news articles, etc. Julie Seigel, is one of the librarians who is available to answer particular questions about the library resources. The information presented by Ms. Seigel was delivered in a clear speech, understandable vocabulary, and at a normal rate of speed.

As new technologies are rapidly introduced, people are able to find any information with the access of internet. This leads to people questioning the relevance of libraries and its true purpose. Public libraries cultivate the value of increased education and a social unity to advancing as a society.

The Long Branch Free Public Library was established 100 years ago with a mission to enrich the lives of Long Branch residents by providing resources and opportunities for life-long learning (Long Branch Free Public Library, n.d.). Currently, the library provides a wide range of services such as a computer lab, employment center, after school youth programs, notary services, faxing, and much more. These features make this library more than just a place to get a book, and the library has been nationally recognized for its innovative services, marking a shift in the idea of what a library can be (Kelly, 2014).

Located in Canada’s capital, Carleton University’s MacOdrum Library is situated in a prime location for students and the community -- even having a dedicated stop along the light rail system known as the OTrain. The library is minutes from downtown and various cultural institutions such as the Canadian War Museum, the National Gallery of Canada, the Canadian Museum of History, the Royal Canadian Mint, Canada Aviation and Space Museum, and the Canadian Museum of Nature. Being in Ottawa also gives MacOdrum Library a strong connection to federal government departments. This helps to encourage Carleton’s strong academic programs such as journalism, public affairs and international affairs (carleton.ca, 2015).

College is a life changing experience for students. College is a new environment for most students and comes with lots of challenges. Things such as the increased difficulty of academic work and not being around the same social groups as a student was before college can make the transition very difficult. One of the best things a student can do to help with this transition is to live in a campus residence hall. Students should live in dorms because of the community that this creates. Students will gain many beneficial social interactions, will be able to better complete academic work, and will ease the adjustment to college life.

Need Thesis: The worth of public libraries in America extends far beyond the books they offer. Despite the value of these resources to struggling communities, libraries have seen a decline in both public usage and federal funding in recent years.

For students to be adequately informed about the value of the university library and resources such as the Internet in information retrieval there must be a careful collaboration between teaching staff and library staff (Kenney, 2007). The focus in this task, of course, is preparing students not just for the immediate research project at hand but rather to prepare them to be life long learners, to prepare them to be successful and productive once they leave the academic environment and take up their chosen careers (Lauer & Yodanis, 2012).
