In early childhood education, it is a common practice to integrate literacy instruction with science content. In the following three lessons, I have chosen to combine literacy instruction with the topic of the seasons in order to provide interdisciplinary learning experiences for preschool children, kindergarten students, and young learners in the second grade. Seasons - Preschool Grade level: Preschool/Pre-Kindergarten Topic: Seasons - Fall Objective: Students will be able to share information about the season of fall through discussion and artwork. Students will be able to choose a favorite season and explain why they like it best. New York State P-12 Common Core Standards Addressed: • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.R1.PK.1 - With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about details in a text. • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.R1.PK.10 - With prompting and support, actively engage in group reading activities with purpose and understanding. • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RW.PK.1 - With prompting and support, use a combination of drawing, dictating, or writing to express an opinion about a book or topic (e.g., I like…. because…) Materials Used: • A copy of It’s Fall (Celebrate the Seasons) by Linda Glaser • Paper • Computer with working internet • Glue • Color printer • Digital camera • Crayons and tissue paper Accommodations made for diverse learners: The teacher will provide support with cutting and gluing for students who have difficulty with fine motor skills.
