Multimodality refers to a theoretical framework on how people express themselves through language. It specifically describes the process of communication in the context of use of a wide range of signs, symbols or semiotics (Bazalgette & Buckingham, 2013). Through multimodality, researchers understand the use of communication media, such as visual, spatial and textual elements to create, convey and receive messages. Therefore, the use of multimedia in social media communication is effectively described on the basis of multimodality. The application of different elements of multimedia in social media communication explains the increasing popularity of Web 2.0 technologies. Multimodality is also applicable in describing how individuals perceive messages in relation to the formats with which they are presented (Zappavigna, 2012). The meaning that is represented by specific communication artifacts is also explained on the basis of multimodality.
In today’s vast globalized world, representation is present and has left its impact everywhere, from politics to media to parts of our everyday life. Representation is defined as the description or portrayal of someone or something in a particular way (Oxford University Press, 2016). This has shaped the way people think, talk and view the things around them. Thus, media representation is the portrayal of a group, community, person, event, idea, experience or perspective by the media, regardless of whether it is visual or verbal. Media representation is also a choice made in constructing facets of reality such as people, places, objects and events in media. Such representations exist in a multitude of forms such as print, films and writing. Generally, it would be difficult to showcase every feature of the person or thing, hence, media has been essentialising the representations to suit the views of the majority.

A large part of my identity is my Asian-American upbringing, so I decided on a project that highlights the lack of Asian representation in mainstream media; I chose this project because it affects me every day.

Music has several functions in the society, such as the expression of emotions; creation of joy; communication; entertainment; integration of a society; and the continuity of culture. These functions of music make music a human need, which results in humans demanding for music. The human need or demand for music makes music a valuable item (good). Therefore, humans (artists) create music as a good that can be sold for revenues and profits. This is how music relates to business. Music is a good that many people (artists) and business (record labels) are involved in its production, distribution, and sale for profits. In fact, musicians have to acquire business skills that will help them manage their public image, organize for tours and shows, design their merchandise, and build a loyal fan base. This is how music and business are related.
