Understanding Polymers Essay

Decent Essays

Polymers are always been around everywhere we go and have been increasing as time goes on. From its inception until today, polymers have enhanced our quality of life. The common questions asked here are usually what they are, where can I find them, where did they come from, how they are made, and what are some future possibilities? The first thing you might want to know about polymers is what they are. Polymers can be very complicated and you can do into great depth to what they are. “Polymers are molecules which consist of a long, repeating chain of smaller units called monomers.” The next question would be what monomers are. Monomers are atoms about 4-10 atoms in size. When monomers are combined together they create polymers. …show more content…

In 1839 Charles Goodyear makes a polymer that is used in tires. In 1869 an American inventor John Hyatt discovered the first plastic. In 1902 Leo Baekeland discovered the first synthetic polymer which was polarized film which he sold to George Eastman for a small fortune. In 1907 a polymer is created that is used as an electronic insulator. The modern polymer theory was a paper titled (Uber Polymerization) which was published by Staudinger in 1920. In 1927 the polymer that is used in bottle and PVC pipe which is created by production of vinyl-chloride resins. The polymer that is used to make Styrofoam was invented in 1930 which is called polystyrene. The polymer Nylon was invented by Wallace Carothers in 1938. In 1939 the first polymer fiber hit the market and this was the first time in history that a synthetic material was more valuable than the natural material in had replaced. The miracle fiber was nylon and it out priced silk when it first came out. The Britain royal air force defeated the German Luftwaffe in a battle do to the capabilities of radar which was made possible by the invention of a polymer that they discovered which was a great electrical insulator. Kevlar was developed in 1971 by Kwolek. In 1976 the polymer/plastic industry passed the steel, aluminum and copper industry combined. (History of Polymers) In Dayton they had their own polymer discovery probably among many more discovered in Dayton,
