Poverty, both situational and generational, affects individuals of all races in every country around the world. Currently in the United States, a family of four is considered to meet poverty guidelines if the income brought in falls at or below $24,250. In Dr. Ruby K. Payne’s A Framework for Understanding Poverty, she explains what the exact definition of poverty is. Subsequently, she builds off of this in-depth description, applying the obstacles both teachers, and students raised in poverty, face daily. Furthermore, she provides circumstances and scenarios that realistically portray what students, or their families, may encounter, and how to appropriately manage situations or correct behaviors within the classroom environment.
