Sanctification is the culminating phase of salvation and is both a gift of God the Son of His imputed righteousness and the gracious work of the Holy Spirit. Additionally though according to Thorsen, it is also the task of regenerated believers to “strive to express God’s love in their experiences” (Thorsen, 2010, p. 186). Understanding sanctification is important as it impacts one’s view on God’s expectations for holiness and the way Believers minister to others. Colossians 1:10-11 says that as we grow in the mind of Christ or are sanctified, we can live a life worthy, which means to bear fruit, grow in the knowledge of God and be strengthened with all power. Romans 5:8 is clear that while we were in our sinful state, God loved us too much to leave us there and God set they that should inhabit the earth so that they perhaps reach out for God and find him (Acts 17:26-27). In 1994, after twenty years of being in and out of relationship with God, I was ready to seriously turn towards Him and away from the orientation of my fallen will. Looking back at my mid-thirties, it is easy to see why I married a man that I could not withstand and sought approval through work. When that marriage dissolved, it did not matter all the wrong things I had done, I was willing to do whatever it took to regain a relationship with God. The repentance and belief cycle (Mark 1:14-15) as a result of kairos moments spanning the past twenty years demand seeing my behaviors, thoughts and feelings measured against God’s love and as opportunities for growth. One of the most significant kairos moments came when I discovered Ephesians 2:10, which says that I am God’s masterpiece created in Christ Jesus to do the good works He has planned for me.
