There are many important aspects of social cognition that are helpful to us in making decisions and help us to interpret the world around us. An important aspect that is linked to social cognition is that of thought suppression. Thought suppression is when a person tries to force particular thoughts, memories or feelings out of their minds that may be unpleasant or may cause a great deal of stress for the individual. Many people are unaware how often we use thought suppression in our daily lives, but the truth is we use it in almost every aspect of our day.

First, learning to work, as a team, can be difficult if the person you’re working with always has to have the right answer or nobody wants to agree on something. Working within a group or team is unavoidable for most people. We are involved in sports teams, assignment groups, work teams, social groups and a variety of other groups and teams. Each of these groups share one thing in common, that is each requires us to communicate in some way in order to reach a shared goal or target. Therefore, it is imperative to know and understand how to work and communicate effectively with others to maximise outcomes and productivity.

From an early age we are instilled the importance of teamwork. The lessons may come from a soccer field, a classroom group project, or even a song on Sesame Street. Regardless of our future careers, we are all likely to experience some sort of teamwork requirement, even if it is as simple as getting along with your co-workers.

When I have to work in a team, I try to reach success with others participants in assigned activities. I do not take the role of leader or follower. I consider myself just another participator, but always thinking about doing everything right and clean. I have always had in mind that teamwork are all those actions and activities that are carried out collectively. In order for there to be an excellent group work, I think is necessary is that the actions are developed collectively. This means that to carry out group work, the existence of an entertainer or coordination is not necessary. The collective performance of an action is sufficient, within the framework of mutual interaction.

Without the natural instinct to cling to one another, humans would not be as advanced as they are today, and may not have even made it out of the caves. Thirdly, our communication skills were better enhanced and we were able to build up on our synergy levels. In such an environment where communication is open and free-flowing, people were able to bring in new ideas, concepts and attitudes which benefitted the entire group. The problem with ineffective communication, especially where diverse groups are involved is that issues such as stereotyping are bound to crop up. This, in turn, caused team members to become increasingly self-conscious and often kept to themselves for fear of being judged. Much to it, the aspect of self-disclosure becomes almost elusive because no one is willing to step out of their comfort zone and steer a relevant discussion to the project at hand. In a scenario whereby team members are free to talk and express their ideas and feelings without being judged, the fear of revealing one’s true self is diminished tremendously (Peri et al., 2000). This is because such an environment fosters trust, values and ethics. Contrary to this, an environment that is characterized by prejudices and presumptions about others disintegrates this trust and often results to reduced productivity among the members. I like working with others for the most part, especially when they are motivated in getting the job done in a timely manner. Then we have some that just don’t want to help but want everybody else to do their work for them.

Aristotle is credited with stating the whole is greater than the simple sum of its parts. This also represents the definition of synergy. Synergy is the unified working of the sum to create something greater than the individual components. For instance a car engine is comprised of an engine block, belts, hoses, spark plugs, and other miscellaneous components. Individually these components are not going to propel a vehicle however when put together and fed some fuel the components create the oomph needed to support transportation. In sports and business the cooperation and collaboration of people in organizations is no different. The people within these groups must be working in a unified manner toward a common set of goals and objectives. This common set of goals and objective provides the end point so that a team of people have the necessary oomph, to achieve outcomes that would otherwise be unattainable by a single individual.

Humans have been forming groups since the beginning of humanity. We are constantly categorized as a group at the basic level as a species, as an ethnicity, and as a society. It is speculated that our success and evolution as a species is based on our ability to work with each other in collaboration on many levels to ensure our survival.
