It is very important to understand where electronic health record (EHR) is coming from or the fundamental basis of EHR which is clinical information system (CIS). CIS is the platform of EHR which is a computer system that is build in a way so as to enable one to collect and store data so that it is available for different health care professionals to use. This paper will address some of the obstacles and benefits during a CIS implementation. Benefits of CIS implementation There are numerous benefits of implementing the clinical information system such as the ability to access patients’ information on the go. It is very important for healthcare professionals and healthcare workers to be able to access patients’ medical data and information on a regular basis. For example, healthcare professionals now have easy access to patients’ information such as vital signs, health history, diagnostics imaging, among other tests. Moreover, implementing clinical information system will allow physicians to prescribe medications to patients in a safer way, which helps to reduce error (Kudyba, 2010). Also, CIS helps to prevent errors in documentation, for example, handwritings that are illegible and difficult to read, CIS would eliminate such problems. Using clinical information system helps physicians to provide a more accurate diagnosis which helps to reduce medical errors and incorrect diagnosis. In CIS, information is structured and well organized in a manner that helps to eliminate the
Patients are very happy with the implementation of clinical information system (CIS) in their healthcare. They are the one who have benefitted the most when it comes to the implementation of CIS. This paper will discuss some of the reasons why they are happy and the benefits that they are reaping with the implementation of CIS.
This is displayed by the use of information and technology to communicate, manage knowledge, decrease error and support decision making. The majority of the healthcare world is ran by technology. Almost all charting is done on computers, which allows more than one healthcare professional to view the patients chart at one time. This technology also allows the patient to access their records online keeping them informed of test results. For example, this is exemplified by physicians entering their own orders into the computer. This prevents the use of unapproved abbreviations and mishandling of
Technology has come a long way over the years and continues to advance rapidly. The health care system is greatly affected by the advancements in technology. An example of this would be the use of electronic health records (EHR). In this paper I will be describing the electronic health record system. How my facility has initiated the EHR with following the six steps and describe meaningful use and how my facility is working towards this. Lastly I will discuss how to maintain patient confidentiality with use of EHR, and what my facility is doing to prevent HIPPA violations.
Traditional patient health records are primarily paper based and all documentation is handwritten. Electronic health records (EHR), as reported by Shi and Singh “are IT applications that enable the processing of any electronically stored information pertaining to individual patients for the purpose of delivering health care services” (p. 161). EHR systems replace the traditional format of medical records. All important data such as a patient’s demographics, problems and diagnostics, plan of care, progress notes medications, vital signs, and past medical history are electronically entered and accessed by
As consumers demand more opportunities to use the internet. The internet is transforming the consumers as they interact with the health care system. Telemedicine for remote patient monitoring of patient health is increasing in use by doctors and health care providers. The internet is also transforming health care through electronic medical records. Records stored electronically boosts survival rates ad improves coordination by allowing facilities and medical providers access to share medical information with ease. An electronic medical record is the heart of any computerized information system in health care. In absence of this, modern technologies such as decision support systems cannot be integrated into the clinical workflow. Current Electronic medical records systems are delivering safe, high quality health care.
Electronic Health Records (EHRs) systems will support the use of e-health, it is very beneficial and is the most complicated type of health information system. EHR benefits include availability, accessibility, and accuracy of data (Ayatollahi). EHR works by involving other information systems in the field of healthcare. Clearly, regularization of other health systems will speed up the process of integration and creation of EHRs. When developing an EHR, the process is not an easy job and contains many barriers that will make accomplishing goals even harder. Before, the EHR is adopted, technical problems must be recognized and solved. The main barriers to the progression and adoption of EHRs include low amounts of national information exchange, not enough human and technical issues, problems about the adjustment of the process, a shortage of integration between health information systems, a shortage of databases, and problems with keeping health information confidential (Ayatollahi). Hospital information systems were established by private information technology (IT) companies. Yet, these systems were not reliable and different vendors’ products could be found in the market; to lead the projects and avoid replication across the country, the Ministry of Health’s statistics and IT management center was selected to be accountable for designing and implementing EHRs (Ayatollahi).
Use of Computers a Necessity in Health Care means Information and information exchange are crucial to the delivery of health care at all levels of the health care delivery system—the patient, the care team, the health care organization, and the encompassing political-economic environment. To ensure this is happening we should be using computer technology in all aspects concerning the patients care. The use of the computers is necessary for current, competent and satisfying health services.
The use of Information system in the field of health care is growing rapidly as a basic requirement for the health care organizations. Health care information systems (HCIS) is also known as Health care Informatics. The purpose of the paper is to discuss how health care informatics are successfully developed and implemented to improve health care efficiency and effectiveness. The hospitals or the medical institutions today is using the increased power of computer devices for graphics, text and for other data manipulation purposes. The inflexibility of the software applications is a major in health care information systems management. Along with this, the incomplete and inconsistent information due to the diversity of isolated information systems is one of the major problems that information technology is facing in field of the healthcare sector. Therefore, health care information systems help to maintain and store the organization data or information in such a way that they can use to analyze the data for future purpose.
One of the demands in healthcare today is to have the ability to allow healthcare organizations to exchange patient health related information with other healthcare organizations. This was made possible by the creation of the electronic health record (EHR), electronic medical record (EMR) and personal health record (PHR). The EHR, PHR and the EMR allowed for patient’s paper medical charts into transformed into electronic charts. This allowed for a better way to organize the information that was contained the paper medical chart. The health organization began to realize they could use these electronic charts for a better way to care and share patient health related information. However, as the transmission of data continued, the need
The use of information technology in healthcare entails a wide range of advanced technologies that are made to manage and share information that is related to health. The most important type of health informatics is a system that gathers, stores, and systematizes health information concerning patients. When correctly implemented, this type of a system can aid in the coordination of care offered to patients, minimize health errors, and improve the efficiency of the medical efficiency.
Abstract— This paper is about the many different challenges of electronic health records and the different advancement that electronic health records have. It talks about the benefits and challenges that may arise with the electronic health records. Also, there are several advancements through the electronic health records especially through the years. They have made several adjustments to make it easily accessible by everyone.
Through the development of information technologies and the ongoing research which is being performed using these various types of technological avenues, patients and their families now have an alternate route of obtaining educational information regarding their health. Technology-based systems for patient information have become quite popular and are being introduced to replace traditional forms of patient education, such as brochures, pamphlets, videos and, to a certain extent, face-to-face communication. In this paper, computer-based patient information systems, possibly have many advantages compared to traditional means as listed above. Patient education is an important element of any organization or institution because a knowledgeable and educated patient can dynamically participate in their own treatment, change the outcome of their health status, help identify errors before they occur, increase patient safety and patient satisfaction and reduce the length of stay in hospitals.
Digitization has transformed the world order almost in every sector, including health sector. There are numbers of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) based tools and applications in the health sector. Electronic Health Record (EHR), one of such popular ICT based systems, is an electronic record system that acts as a depository of patients’ past and present medical records. Clinical documentation, clinical test and imaging results, computerized order entry system and decision support system are all comprised in EHR (Hayrinen, Saranto & Nykanen, 2008). Thus EHR can construct an errorless data management system for quality, safety and efficient health sector.
These paper based system were inefficient for managing large databases thereby affecting the health care of the patients. These conventional methods were not only unorganized but also sometimes illegible [4, 13], making it harder for the physicians to locate the information of the patients [5, 13]. Most of the time, patients had to retake the tests causing delay in medical examination and increase in cost. In the recent past, with the advent of bioinformatics, storage of medical records is becoming computerized and thereby improving healthcare.
This is a system that has been put to good use by many healthcare institutions. It is a PC based system that provides room for keeping clinical records for the patients, storing data and maintenance of schedules for the healthcare technicians. It has elements: clinical patient support and electronic media records, which are vital in making sound clinical decision in the shortest time period. In addition, the system forms a hub for training and research since the information regarding the patients may be availed to the physicians for the purpose of establishing new medical phenomena.
