The Atkins diet is strictly regimented with a carbohydrate controlled and protein abundant regime. It is because of the promotion of protein consumption that the Atkins diet represents significant health risks.
The diet requires strict adherence to a protein rich plan in order to achieve the desired results. The potential health problems resulting from this diet could be seveer simply because too much protein raises saturated fat levels. Such levels can lead to heart disease, osteoporosis, or kidney disease. The Atkins diet is examined below in relation to these health risks in order to evaluate the damage that it represents.

Diets that are rich in protein, especially animal protein, are known to cause people to excrete more than the normal levels of calcium with their urine. The loss of calcium increases the risk of osteoporosis. It has been shown that countries with lower-protein diets have lower rates of osteoporosis and hip fractures. In addition, it is excess amounts of calcium that can lead to the formation of kidney stones.
