Undeserved communities, when referencing health, include those who find trouble accessing health care for any apparent reason. Living in such close proximity to an “undeserved community,” where such opportunities were not available allowed me to witness the numerous things that they sometimes go without, specifically in the realm of education.
Being successful in today's world is essential to a lot of individuals, including myself, but I do believe that being successful comes with the responsibility of providing for those who happen to not be as fortunate. I fulfilled the needs of my community by operating an at home tutoring service. Any child who may have had difficulties with homework or needed assistance with projects or presentations had
According to the U.S Department of Health and Human Services (Kassandra, A., 2015), the issue of health disparities have impacted many people’s lives in the community where the minority groups do not have equal access to the quality health care. These
I remember when my dad would always encourage me and my siblings to be successful in school, because if you are successful you will make it to the real world. The real world is tough and people need
Education is the best way to continue the revolution started by Mr. Adams and others. I work hard to achieve good grades and I devote countless hours to tutoring others to ensure their success as well. I work, plan, build, and dream in order to achieve the success God has planned. With hard work and courage, I will make a difference in this world that will benefit many. PSM symbolizes a learning torch for many children who come from all walks of life as it provides a vigorous education, a safe environment, and a platform to push oneself beyond perceived limits. Mr. Adams hires passionate teachers who care about our learning and well-being. In return, we demonstrate our appreciation by attending prestigious colleges, making noticeable contributions to society, and returning to talk to the new up and coming PSM students. I admire Mr. Adams and all of the righteous undertakings he has endured. And just like Mr. Adams, I plan to pass the torch on to the next generation yet to
accomplished through education. Education is the fundamental key to a child's success. Whether it’s in academics, athletics, or community service, my experiences create
In the segment of Unnatural Causes, “In Sickness and in Wealth”, the documentary highlights the health disparity created by different socioeconomic statuses. There are several factors that lead to these health differences, including but not limited to policies or lack of policies, and racism. Unnatural Causes draws on several family stories to exemplify the wealth health gradient. Within the family anecdotes, I was most intrigued by the idea of health access. This concept is highlighted throughout the different life cases in the segment. However, it is not just limited to these individuals, communities, and time period. Although health access is considered a universal right, access is not equal among individuals in the US. Access to health is determined by an individuals’ wealth. This is exemplified by the poor health outcomes of those in low-income communities; whereas, individuals in higher income communities have better health outcomes.
Also enjoy working in a partnership with my families. I provide children a diverse and developmentally appropriate environment that allows them to meet their individual needs. In my program I help families achieve their goals. For instance, if a parent tells me that they want to take English classes but don’t know how to enroll. I find resources for them in the community and help them to accomplish their goals by providing the information. In the past I had a parent who wanted to further her education but did not know what to do. I provided her with information regarding enrollment, fafsa, and made her an appointment for an assessment. I informed her that the library has computers she can use in order to complete her application.
After graduation, I committed myself to learning new things and more importantly to try things that intimidated and frightened me. While doing so, I searched for and found a way to make a change in the lives of those who needed help the most. I became a career advisor for one of Washington D.C’s largest workforce development projects. I was tasked with the responsibility of teaching DC’s welfare population the essential skills needed to progress in life, and succeed in the workforce. Having overcame being a learning disabled student, and traumatic brain injury I was
The 1991 article Savage Inequalities written by Jonathan Kozal he highlights the fact that every person is entitled to the right to receive quality care and education, but there can be overwhelming social factors that prevent students in a small Illinois town from getting an equal education. The author shrewdly described the morbid living conditions experienced by the residence of East St Louis, Illinois. A predominately black community near the banks of the Mississippi River.
An underserved are a population group that experiences significant health disparities. Health disparities are differences in health status when compared to the general population, often characterized by indicators such as higher incidence of disease and disability, increased mortality rates, lower life expectancies, and higher rates of pain and suffering. Rural risk factors for health disparities include geographic isolation, lower socio-economic status, higher rates of health risk behaviors, and limited job opportunities. Higher rates of chronic illness and poor overall health are found in rural communities when compared to urban populations.
It is important to understand determinants such as poverty, lack in health care access, exposure to disease early in life, social positions, gender, race/ethnicity will all effect communities who receive health inequalities. Organizations such as WHO, National Institute of Health (NIH), and Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have been working to provide the best quality of care for urban/rural populations. An adjustment in policies is needed to protect access to health, education, and employment for disadvantaged populations. Even though governments have made policies to provide health to all, we can see urban/rural populations are in a lack of quality of care. Health needs to be a right for all, and not based on whether in urban area or socioeconomic status they are in. Individuals’ irrespective of socioeconomic class or race should have the same rights and
Throughout my high school career, I had an obligation to help this family business to support my family financially. On weekends and majority of the weekdays, I spend my time aiding my parents while juggling numerous amounts of school work. Senior year proved to be the hardest, with five advancement placement classes that I take and while still helping out at the restaurant. Such environment that I was raised in, has shaped me to become a disciplined and responsible individual.
- Health Science Scholars Honors Thesis - I am writing my honors thesis for Health Science Scholars on urban-rural health disparities and different strategies that have been attempted globally to alleviate these inequalities. In my research, I have learned more about the huge disparities that exist in access in the US and globally and I hope to be able to work to alleviate these disparities.
These vulnerable populations according to Shi and Stevens (2005) experience disparities in access to care and have poorer health status than the population as a whole.
The use of the concept ‘community health’ can be ambiguous. The first word ‘Community’ refers to a group of people with diverse characteristics but connected via social ties, share common perspectives and live in a somewhat similar geographical area with similar norms and values (Goodman, Bunnell, & Posner, 2014). They may be defined by locality such as village, county, region or by other characteristics such as age, education (student community). Most people are members of multiple communities with different cultures and expectations for instance an individual may be a member of the Christian and student community.
Throughout my life, I’ve realized my definition of success has been through achieving my goals to serve others and ultimately never stop learning. My work ethic and character traits have contributed to reaching my goals in high school and will prepare me for the future.
