Unethical behavior has always been a topic of interest and discussion within our society. More often than not, it is in response to a recent event which has brought to light the actions of others which we deem as morally wrong or unethical. These situations can range from a business paying their employees unfairly based upon gender, or a teacher helping their students cheat in an effort to pass an exam. Despite the vast majority of society knowing actions such as these are wrong they continue to surprise us and occur at a high frequency. Ethical dilemmas have been and will continue to be a source of much debate. Regardless of the occupation, each employee should have the moral compass to realize there is something inherently wrong with treating a customer differently based upon individual characteristics. In this scenario, treating patients differently on the basis of their social economic status is morally wrong. While morals and ethics do differ, often they run together with morals being the building blocks for ethical behavior. The code of ethics of physical therapists was established by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and is built upon a series of principles with the foundation for these principles being the profession’s core values; accountability, altruism, compassion, excellence, integrity, professional duty, social responsibility. This code is a living doctrine for physical therapists and serves to guide the profession in pursuit of providing the highest quality of patient care. In this code, principle one makes clear each patient will be treated with respect regardless of their gender, age, race, religion, or economic status. Given the differences in the healthcare provider and time of treatment, the company in this situation has completely disregarded this principle. In a feeble attempt to justify their actions, the company used pro bono service as a reason for the differences in patient groups.
