The population of America is becoming more aware of the importance of good nutrition. Ironically the people are becoming increasingly less healthy. In the 1960's the nation ate healthier but knew less about nutrition. The foods that the teenagers consume today contributes to the increasing weight and decreasing health of the nation. Many outside factors determine the eating habits of teenagers today.
When the baby boomer generation grew up a majority of the homes had mothers who worked in the home. The mother usually made sure that the meal prepared for dinner was balanced and healthy. Today many teens live in homes where both parents work. This means that after school and most likely past dinner time they are alone. When

So on the way to work they will buy dinner at a fast food restaurant. Places such as McDonalds's, Burger King, and Taco Bell have begun to appear on every street corner. Fast food restaurants made an appearance in America in the 1960's. They have not been around for very long and already the effects are destroying the health of the people in America. This is because people go to what to tastes good and these foods taste good to the kids. When their parents grew up a trip to grandmas for Sunday dinner was a treat and a variety from the meals at home. Today the treat is going out to a fast food restaurant. These foods are usually inexpensive, prepared for the person, and they taste good. The downside to these places is that their food is greasy and high in fat. Both of these are contributors to high blood pressure and high frequency of heart attacks among the American population.
College age students face different problems than the teens in high school. When students live in dormitories at a university or college, they eat on a meal plan. They usually do not have money of their own to spend on food at restaurants so the cafeteria regulates what food they eat. The cafeterias serve a lot of foods such as hamburgers or other meats with sauces and a lot of potatoes. These foods are very high in starch and cause of weight gain.
A major part of college is the all night study sessions before a test. These all
"We don 't walk. We overeat because we 've made it easy to overeat. We have fast-food joints on every corner. By the way, the 'we ' is all of us. It 's not the government. It 's all of us doing this together.”(Mehmet Oz). Fast food has been affecting Americans lives since the 1919’s and 1920’s where the first fast food restaurant originated. They were called A&W in 1919 and White Castle in 1921. More than 3 million cases of obesity in America happen a year. Over time the frequency of fast food restaurants increased and became more common in people’s lives. Big fast food franchises such as McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy 's, and Pizza Hut have changed the world and not in a great way. Over 3 million cases of diabetes happen in a year and an estimated 17.5 million people died from CVDs in 2012, representing 31% of all global deaths. Diabetes is a metabolic disease in which the body’s inability to produce any or enough insulin causes elevated levels of glucose in the blood. Fast food is food that can be prepared quickly. It is easily and quickly sold in restaurants and snack bars as a quick meal or to be taken home. Obesity is the condition of being grossly fat or overweight. Cardiovascular conditions are a group of disorders of the heart and blood vessels. Many people suffer from these diseases and it becomes a negative impact in their lives. Fast food causes diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular conditions.
There are fast food restaurant all over the world. People think that just because fast food is easily accessible that it is okay for them and their children to eat. The obesity rate and disease in America has increased over the years. Many people are dying because of obesity and related diseases. Fast food restaurant are growing in America and the world. The restaurants do not realize that they are killing people. Which is making people grow in weight all over the world. Another thing that is killing people in fast food is unsanitary health problems.
Fast food was created for the taste buds; the food is delicious, greasy, and unfortunately is calorie high. The human body cannot handle eating unhealthy types of food and if the body does not get the required vitamins to remain healthy issues will arise. One of the most common fast food related health issues is obesity. Obesity can also lead to diabetes, high blood pressure/sugar, cardiovascular diseases, and even sleep disorders. This can be avoided by exercising after eating high-calorie foods. However, Americans have very busy schedules that exercise cannot be a part of a daily routine. Currently, the fast food industry has tried to add healthier menu options, but with that means higher prices of items. Therefore, many food chains have not created healthier options because the company is afraid to lose customers due to higher food prices. The other effect of continually eating out is the added up of money. Even though the prices are affordable, the amount of money for a regular customer will begin to increase. Money does not grow on trees, and the majority of people work to make money to survive in their daily lives. A college student can survive on continuously buying fast food for oneself, but when compared to a family of three or four surviving on take out will put a hole in the bank
the population of healthy people in the united states decreases faster and faster because of eating at fast food restaurant. The problem is the people of the united states go to a fast food restaurant because its so convenient for Americans. But what people dont realize is that eating at these fast food restaurants cause people to contract health problems such as obesity, diabetes, heart problems, etc all due to the fact that Americans would rather eat at a fast food restaurant. Eating at fast food places is damaging the health of Americans because they start to cause health problems.
Fast food restaurants have provided people easy access to a quick meal. However, the increase in substituting home cooked healthy meals with these fast food choices has lead to any changes in the American population today. The lack of nutritional value and high carbohydrate and trans fat found in many fast food meals have led to obesity and other major health problems. The effects of eating an increased amount of fast food can be seen by taking a unbiased look at the American people today.
Several researchers have examined the reasoning behind eating habits. They believe that if the reasoning behind eating habits was determined and known, then possibly bad eating habits could be decreased. High school students and college students especially need to be cautious of the food they are consuming. Bad food choices may not affect them now, but will play a huge role in the future. Nutritional intake during adolescence is important for growth, long-term health promotion, and the development of lifelong eating behaviors. The total nutrient needs are higher in adolescence than during any other time in the life cycle because of rapid growth and development (Casey, Neumark-Sztainer, Perry & Story, 1999).
Teenagers have really busy lives. They do not always eat the best because they do not have time and energy to focus on eating nutritious meals (Rogers 2011). Especially if teens are in sports, they usually just grab a snack and go. Not only do Americans eat way to many carbohydrates in a meal, but it’s also what is making us fat. Eating bad food affects you tremendously in the long run. It leads to sensitivity, allergies, cancer, heart disease, and many other diseases (Baker 2011). Also eating unhealthy, lacks in many essential nutrients and it takes nutrients from our bodies (Baker
One serving of a plate changed to second servings, which was a big difference. Even the size of the plate changed to more bigger sizes so more food could fit on the plate. Adults weren't there to help guide kids the proper way to live, eat. He explains the drastic change of teens and how easy teens developed staple foods. David Zinczenko discusses, “My parents were split up, my dad off trying to rebuild his life, my mom working long hours to make the monthly bills. Lunch and dinner for me was a daily choice of mcdonalds, Taco Bell, Kentucky fried chicken or Pizza Hut.” (10).
Fast food is a major health issue because it causes obesity. In the article, “Obesity and Fast Food”, Dr. Anaya Mandel claims, “It is well known that eating out may lead to excess calorie intake and increases the risk of obesity because of large portion sizes and increased energy density of foods”(1). This author is stating that restaurants such as McDonald’s can cause obesity. Thus, eating at any fast food restaurant can increase chances of obesity. Meals at these restaurants are cheap, therefore people in a rush or people who regularly consume fast foods will end up buying the cheaper and greasier meals. The “dollar menu” on many fast food restaurant drive in menus may seem like a “better buy” to customers, but, the cookies, sweets, and sandwiches are all what creates the fats in their bodies. It will eventually increase the calories in their body and cause them to gain weight and develop obesity. American psychological association article states, in America, the rates of obesity have about tripled in children and youths(1). Younger people in America have started gaining weight
Why don’t teenagers eat healthy? They have not stopped dressing, playing sports, working, or traveling, so why did they stop eating healthy? Is it because today they have grown up with junk food and that they do not know how to eat healthy? Maybe it is because they are so involved with many other activities that they can’t find the time to eat a decent meal. Whatever the specific reason may be, American teenagers have stopped eating healthy and something needs to be done. This paper tells the reasons why American teenagers have stopped eating healthy, but first it explains some reasons as to why teenagers eat so unhealthy.
The typical American spends $1,200 on fast food. That is broken down into $100 a month or roughly $12.50 on each meal. More and more fast food chains are beginning to grow due to the amount of money people are spending at them. The idea of one meal at Mcdonalds costing less than a head of lettuce is outrageous.
Fast foods contain a large amount of fat. Both sugar and salt are pervasive in fast food items like ground sirloin sandwiches, hash browns, French fries and, obviously, soft drinks. Some people like eating at fast food restaurants because it is more convenient than cooking at home. Many parents are tired from work and want to relax. They know it is bad for them, but why do they continue to eat junk food? I think most families don’t have money to buy healthy food. Sometimes they don’t care; they just want to eat something fast, quick, and ready to go. Most burgers have so much
Fast food is synonymous with bad health. Rarely can you find a fast food restaurant that doesn’t include hamburgers and french fries. Fast food corporations are constantly trying to find ways to innovate their approaches to draw in crowds, and most important of all, to rake in the cash. Most decisions in the corporate world are made because of money; For example, the rise in reboots in the movie industry can be attributed to the assumption that reboots of famous movie franchises are guaranteed money makers. Because of this, the fast food industry does not care about the health effects of its consumers. Occasionally, a restaurant will introduce healthier items to the menu in an effort to get health-conscious customers. For example, Domino’s Pizza recently introduced salads to their menu, so people who want pizza and people who want salad can compromise and still end up going to Domino’s. Even this marketing ploy is aimed at receiving an influx of cash. With obesity, heart disease, and cancer on the rise, it may be time to evaluate the fast food industry and wonder whether or not easily accessed, cheap food is worth the health risks.
The amount of caloric intake from fast food has been a concern to American people. Everyday, thousand of people, especially children and adolescent, consume a huge amount of calories from fast food. Seeing this as a problem that should be concerned, Allison Aubrey comes up with her article “About A Third Of U.S. Kids And Teens Ate Fast Food Today” based on the report of CDC called “Caloric Intake From Fast Food Among Children and Adolescents in the United States, 2011-2012”, to show the amount of calories kids consume on any given day from fast food.
Is fast food getting to be a problem? Many people love fast food but do not even now what it does to their body. There is getting to be more and more evidence that fast food is bad for people. Just about every day there is somebody that is going to the hospital because of all the fast food they eat. People may not like fast food because it is unhealthy, targets children, and exploits animals.
