Unit 1 - Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults 1.1 The Importance of maintaining effective communication with children, young people and adults Effective communication is key to developing and then maintaining relationships at all levels of teaching because the pupils have to be able to understand the messages that are being conveyed. Good communication and the ability to express ones feelings and thoughts is an important enabler to building trust between Teaching Assistant, pupils and other colleagues. It is important to quickly identify where a child could be having difficulties in building relationships with adults or fellow pupils. There may be a number of underlying issues affecting the child’s relationship building abilities and it is therefore necessary to isolate and try to resolve these issues. For example, a child that has suffered bullying may not be as open to relationships as other children. They may not easily trust others and may therefore need more Teaching Assistant time and reassurance to build the relationship. Children with learning difficulties such as dyslexia, or autism, may need more support in building relationships both with adults and with other children. They are likely to be less confident in their own abilities and are more likely to be introverts. On the other hand, children with certain medical conditions may be extroverted and need additional help to build the right sort of communication and relationship skills with others. Child groups should be encouraged to be inclusive with children who may struggle to form and maintain normal relationships. The Teaching Assistant can play an important role in encouraging this behaviour. Parents The school will thrive with the goodwill of the parents and it is therefore vital that the home-school relationship remains positive at all times.
