Horror assignment Horror can be divided into different categories e.g. we have direct horror, suggested horror, shock, cinematic dread and cinematic terror. In this assignment I will look at an episode where I will ana-lyse it with focus on the horror genre and make a comparison to penny dreadful pilot, an episode we have watched in class. The episode I will analyse is from the series Supernatural. This is an Ameri-can fantasy horror series. The series follows the two brothers Sam and Dean Winchester as they hunt demons, ghosts, monsters and other supernatural beings. All five types of horror are used in the supernatural pilot. The direct horror is used when “the wom-an in white” kills her male victims because they have been their wife/girlfriend …show more content…
This is when the protagonist (Sam and Dean) is active in the action. This makes the audience active as well because we want them to win. Cinematic terror is used a lot in the Supernatural series due to the fact that the series is built up about Sam and Dean hunting and killing the supernatural e.g. (supernatural pilot, from 00:34:08) The scene shows Sam and Dean fighting against the ghost. The ghost attack Sam. Dean shoots on it so it weakens it makes Sam able to finish the job by driving her home to her kids she drowned. This is why she could not go home and this is the reason she disappears at the end. This shows that the main character’s win and it makes the audience satisfied. If the Supernatural pilot should be compared to the Penny dreadful pilot, we will se a lot of differ-ences e.g. language, time period (postmodern vs. Victorian age) and target audience. The language is different in the two series because supernatural is a postmodern series and Penny dreadful have some traditional accepts in the episode. This traditional society is seen in the Penny dreadful pilot because they have a more formal language than the supernatural pilot e.g. (Penny dreadful pilot, 00;08;10) this scene shows a formal conversation between the two main characters (Ethan and Vanessa). This is seen when they use words like Mama, Miss, Gentleman and Sir. The supernatural language is postmodern because the use irony, slang and so on. This makes the language casual as you use it in everyday
the gothic literature is fiction but might have some real events and magical realism is a fictiious.
These snacks are offered freely and never forced upon a child. We’re not to bring in unhealthy snacks for ourselves or eat in front of the children, and if we have unhealthy food it must be kept in a cupboard hidden and put away.
Gothic stories contain supernatural occurrences to incite an imminent feeling of darkness, and mystery. Using supernatural themes helps the reader become entrapped in the story, causing the reader to crave more of the story. For example, in Edgar Allen Poe’s The Black Cat in the short story Poe integrates the theme of supernatural by creating a dark and ominous
Physical abuse is defined as the use of physical force that may result in bodily injury, physical pain, or impairment. Physical abuse may include hitting, beating, pushing, shoving, shaking, slapping, kicking, pinching, and burning. Also, inappropriate use of drugs and physical restraints, force-feeding, and physical punishment of any kind also are examples of physical abuse.
Supernatural phenomena can be seen with a side where everything can have a logical explanation, correspondingly in “The Tell Tale Heart” all tormenting sounds and visions can be explained by the insanity the main character contains. An example of this is “It grew louder-louder-louder!and still, the man chatted pleasantly and smiled”(pg.94). This reveals that the clangor of the heartbeat was inaudible, according to the reactions the policemen gave. This is important in creating a horror story because though supernatural has a logical explanation, it increases the horror nonetheless. In addition, “For it was not the old man who vexed me, but his Evil Eye”(pg.90). This reveals what has caused the homicide was the eye and not the person itself, in reality, the eye could have possessed normal characteristics but the psychotic intents the main character incorporates, perhaps, altered its appearance. This emphasizes the horror because
Suspense is a crucial ingredient in the making of horror and thriller films. The significance of suspense in horror films is to bring out the “twist or unexpected moment of realization that makes someone scream and one's heart race. In the film industry, there are various types of genre, but as different as films may seem, they all have one element that links them all together. That element is known as Mise-en-scene. Mise-en-scene is a French phrase that means “putting into the scene.” Mise-en-scene includes elements such as setting, lighting, costume, and figure movement and expression (acting).
Supernatural elements is something that cannot be explained by the laws of nature. These elements, such as religious figures and activities, ghosts, witches and anthropomorphized animals have been used to develop themes throughout literature. These supernatural elements are often used to outline the conflict within the plot and creates an atmosphere of mystery and suspense throughout the text, which establishes the gothic. Supernatural components leave us to question what is real and what is our imagination.
Alex’s spookiest experience was when she was watching a t.v. show and it actually convinced her that a women could communicate with the dead. This is related to gothic literature because they both have supernatural elements. However, it's also related to magical realism because it was realistic but also contained surreal elements. Edgar Allan Poe’s “Fall of The House of Usher” is an example of gothic literature because it resembles a dark and mysterious plot. While Julio Cotazar’s “House Taken Over” is an example of magical realism because the house gets taken over by Nazi’s, but seems as if ghost’s took over.
Lastly, supernatural elements are essential for novels with gothic features. Frankenstein lacks unexplainable features; however, science, especially electricity, here can be regarded as a supernatural element because it was an unknown but new discovery of that time. Electricity is used in the novel to give the monster life.
The purpose of the supernatural in Literary Works The purpose of the supernatural in literature can vary in function from story to story. The supernatural can be used to create a certain mood in writing or to enhance the dramatic effect of a story. The supernatural can also be used as the reasoning behind a story and act as the theme it centers on, creating a paranormal effect and a mystical experience for the reader.
