Unit 12 Social Services Assignment

In our Social Services Class, we talked about many things but two of them stood out the most: anti-oppressive practises and the Indigenous people. We learned about residential schools and how these schools came to be to destroy the culture of the Indigenous people. Young children were abducted from their homes, separated and beaten whenever they displayed anything that was remotely similar to their culture. Some were in sexually abused and some even died while in the care of these schools. The last school may have been shut down in 1996 but the effects these schools caused are felt to this day and have affected generations of Aboriginal people.

We learned about the origins of the Youth Criminal Justice Act created around 2003 and how it was proceeded by both the Juvenile Delinquents Act and the Young Offenders Act. The Youth Criminal Justice Act was created with many amendments and reforms. We learned that young offenders are given conditional discharges where they will not receive a criminal record.

Key Themes Assignment
The Key Themes assignment was a unique assignment that will be attached to the end of this paper. It was unique in the fact that we looked at the broad range of services that social service workers dealt with and talked about which populations benefited from these services the most. It helped me gain a more clinical understanding of the different functions of the services provided by social service workers.
Multiculturalism
Niagara College’s Multiculturalism course was full to the brim of knowledge spanning Discrimination, racism, sexuality, and immigration along with much more. The first thing I learned in the course were about multiculturalism and ethnocentrism. We learned some of the temporary and permanent ways people come to Canada such as: studying in Canada for two years as well as having one year of work experience, being sponsored by Family or work, and having a visa (Student and visitor). As well as that all sounds sadly things are not always so easy for an immigrant or refugee. Normally they work in jobs where the labour is intense and the pay minimal, get disrespected by their community and have a lack of resources available to them due to the fact that they might not be able to speak English fluently if at all. Some who were doctors in their home country would find it near impossible to get the same profession again in Canada. Even with the hardships, they continue on to make a better life for
