Unit 201:- Principles of communication in adult social care settings. Outcome one: - Understand why communication is important in adult social care settings 1.1 Identify different reasons why people communicate. Communication is essential in everyday life. The more efficient and effective we communicate the better quality of life we can achieve not only for ourselves but for those around us. Ideally I would find out about a tenant’s preferences before I visited them for the first time. This allows me to communicate in a productive way and encourages the individual to feel positive about our future relationship. By finding out in advance any communication preferences also allows you time to prepare for barriers such as language or culture differences. Failing to research into these could cause offence. 2.2 Describe a range of communication methods. There are many ways to communicate other than straight forward talking which many people find more productive than having a verbal conversation. These include: - * Gestures. * Use of pictures. * Facial expressions. * Body language. * Position. * Touch. * Sign language BSL (British Sign Language) or MAKATON (which uses signs and symbols.) In Colliers, we have a ‘Chinese community’ by knowing this in advance enabled me to gain knowledge from colleagues, family and friends which means of communication the tenant finds easiest or most productive and what others generally use to minimise language barriers.
