3.7 Learning Styles Action Research Project
Felicity Price DATA COLLECTION & FINDINGS The learning style survey reflected that I am a strong visual learner. The survey was extremely accurate and has a strong correlation as to why certain subjects are easier for me to be successful in than others. For example, math is easier for me to grasp than literature based courses. Mathematics is comprised of complex formulas and diagrams. Explicit modeling must be done by the instructor (solving problems on the board and drawing diagrams) in order to effectively teach math. This is a direct contrast to literature instruction. In preparation for an exam or in class assignment, studying consists of me to completing a series of math problems over and over and/or reading material multiple times. While completing assignments and test I can often close my eyes and visualize information on a page without it being directly in front of me. Notes are often color coded and or written in colored pen. As a visual learner it will be

After analyzing results, I deviated from my lecture style of teaching and began making the students more accountable for their learning. Visual students interpret information more clearly if it is in color. To expand their learning I encouraged students to use highlighters (to identify key vocabulary) and colored pencils / crayons in their math journals (to draw diagrams). Students were also encouraged to draw pictures of a story to show their comprehension of reading material. In addition, I planned more visual games to help students with reading and mathematics. Students participated in review jeopardy, jigsaw activities and used white boards to write timed group responses to answer questions. As a result student engagement increased and behavior significantly improved among
Ashley, I am A visual learner who strengths are memorizing information from my INFT124 course and it allows me to quickly remember simple and complex facts that relate to my course assignments. In addition to this, these activities also help me know what topics to research for my discussions with my classmates and it helps me understand how to complete my weekly assignments in an correct way. Finally, my visual learning style helps me learn how to write organized informative notes on important educational and business issues in this
There are three different kinds of learning styles, there’s auditory learner, tactical learner, and also visual learner. If you take a test like I did you can find what kind of learning styles you are best at. An auditory learner is when you learn better by listening to something or someone. A tactical learner is when you learn best by touching and feeling something or someone and that means that it can be a hands on activity. And a visual learner is when you learn finer when you’re looking at something or someone that is showing a demonstration. When I took the learning styles test I got the results of, tactical learner 40%, auditory learner 35%, and visual learner 25%. So I am best at a tactical learner, which means I learn best by touching
I always make a list of things that need to be done and always carry a notebook with me to take notes. For my visual style way of learning, I found it is to see the task being done so I can better understand the task at hand by closing my eyes and try to see the word before I write it. Also to better understand the subject is to watch videos or movies.
In order to effectively teach students with different learning styles, I will most likely be using this website for ideas. Education.com has everything. They tell you how to know what styles your children are better with and give you some activities that you can use to reach all of those students. On their site, you can find specific activities for any grade, or subject, up through high school. For example, I will be teaching third grade so I would go and look under third grade and then go under whatever subject I need, such as math. Once there, I just scroll through and pick an activity that allows student to interact with each other while practicing the subject and having fun. I can also use
Visual Study Strategies – In this form of learning strategy, there is a preference to learn through what can be seen either in form of pictures and posters, slides, or demonstrations. Those who utilize this method of learning often prefer presenters who use gestures and picturesque languages. It is not uncommon to find these form of learners underline words or sentences with different colors of highlighters. They learn or take in information or materials best by utilizing some or all of the styles that visually appeal to them.
These results show that I am a Visual learner, which means I learn by reading or seeing pictures.
Throughout my high school and early college career, the concept of a learning style is far from foreign. I have learned of the three main learning styles: auditory, visual, and kinesthetic. I have taken multiple tests and found out what my learning style is and that it has not changed much throughout my educational career. Earlier in this course, I learned that I need to adapt the way the teacher is teaching to the learning style that best suits me. My learning style is mainly visual and kinesthetic. However, the questionnaire created by Barbara Soloman and Richard Felder has given me a lot more insight to my learning style. I have learned more about my learning style such as what type of learner I am, how I learn best, my preferred way to
In the learning styles test, it resulted that I am a visual learner. I believe that this is true because I would rather to see a demonstration of what I am supposed to do so I can be able to do it by myself later on. It is effective for me when I am studying because I can remember what I saw as opposed to what I heard. Also, I get distracted easily therefore if a class session tends to be long and only involves discussions and talking, I tend to space out a lot. The results says that visual learners should always be sure to look at the study materials and make use of flash cards, which I tend to do all the time. In the value assessment section, I did the Rokeach Value Survey and this was a great one. It helped to prioritize terminal and instrumental
It is practical to assume that students will perform better in tasks that reflect their particular style of learning, so knowledge of students’ learning styles, including a variety of tasks will make teaching more inclusive. A learning style questionnaire could be handed out at the start of a course which, once completed will inform the teacher about the learning styles of the students.
The learning styles quiz was very helpful and will probably prove to be helpful for the rest of my college career. Understanding how you learn and the best way for you to retain the information you are given is key to being learning the material and being a successful student. Especially as a freshman in college everything is taken to such a higher level and there are much higher expectations than in high school. This quiz allowed me to realize in which ways I will be the most successful when it comes to learning and retaining information, especially as an engineering student.
We are faced with many different learning experiences. Some of these experiences have made a better impact than others. We can attribute this to our learning style. A person’s learning style is the method through which they gain information about their environment. Research is going on all over the world to help explain learning styles. To me, it is our responsibility to learn about these different learning styles so we can appeal to every type of learner in our world. Howard Gardner has elaborated on the concept of learning style through what he calls “multiple
According to the results of the Learning Preferences Survey, my preferred learning style is Visual/ Verbal. I had a total score of 18 in the visual/ verbal column which was actually the highest in the perceptual learning preferences survey that I took. The visual/ verbal learning style is an indication that I prefer graphical organization to access and understand new information in addition to avid reading and note- taking. The second learning style in the perceptual learning preferences was tactile/ kinesthetic in which I had a total score of 16. This learning style involves using one’s body, hands, and sense of touch. The visual/ nonverbal and auditory learning styles, on the other hand, tied with 13 points. The visual/nonverbal
At the beginning of the semester an assignment was given out in regards to assessing your learning styles. Upon doing the assignment I felt that I already knew the results I would obtain due to the fact that I did the same assignment my sophomore year of college. I was totally surprised with my results because they showed that I am becoming a more balanced learner. In previous assignments the results would usually show that I am more of one type of learner than another. My learning styles reflected that I am an active, sensory, visual and global learner. Knowing this aided in my success in this class as well as others because I started to apply this information into how I prepared or retained information for classes.
Personal learning styles are highly complex and unique to specific individuals. It is often difficult to pinpoint an exact learning style. Though there are different categories, we often fine tune them to our own abilities. By examining our traits and tendencies we create a clearer understanding of how we process and learn information. With careful review, I have developed a specific analysis of my learning characteristics, including an evaluation of skill levels. Based on what I have recently learned and know from experience, I have also devised a structured plan for improvement of time management and study skills.
A) I expected to get artistic, creative and investigative as my results on surveys that I took, because I already knew I had these traits as a part of my personality. However, the results from my learning styles survey were a little surprising to me. I got visual as my highest total score, while kinesthetic and auditory were almost balanced out scores. The reason why I was a little surprised was that last year, I took a survey to figure out my learning style, and I got both auditory and visual learner. The results have their little differences, but that shows people do change over time. Learning styles can be learned and strengthened.
