Communication and Professional Relationships with Children, Young People and Adults.
1.1 Explain why effective communication is important in developing positive relationship with children, young people and adults.
Forming and maintaining positive relationships within a school setting is of great importance. To have good relationships with pupils, staff and parents is not only beneficial to the school but also to pupil’s achievement.
Communication is vital in the building of positive relationships. Both verbal and none verbal communication skills are needed when forming relationships so that people feel comfortable and at ease in your presence.
In my setting I work closely mainly with the Teacher and Teaching assistant.

Body Language Positive body language is important, and if with young children it is best to come down to their level. Smile and use positive gestures like a ‘thumbs up’. Often I will have to remind the pupils of their behaviour, this can be done with a simple glance or folding of the arms.
Listening and Responding. It is important to listen and the pupil an opportunity to speak, so they can express their own thoughts and feelings. You should respond appropriately and you may need to repeat back to make sure of your understanding. This also makes the pupil aware that you are listening and are interested. For example in my setting I had a pupil tell me that his Dad hurt his thumb with a hammer when he was putting a picture up. I repeated the sentence back to him but also continued the conversation by asking questions like, ‘Did his Dad have a sore thumb’, and ‘Did he need a plaster’. This showed that I was interested and I was also listening. The pupil responded well and was very excited to be telling me about it.
Eye Contact Eye contact is a key factor to consider when communicating with pupils, this also shows that you are listening and interested. Looking away is deemed to be ill mannered. You also need to give them your attention, if possible stop what you are doing and actively listen. Often I will have a pupil come up to me and ask me a question when I am in the middle of
