Understand the importance of good personal hygiene.

1. Explain why good personal hygiene is important. Good personal hygiene is important in many ways to individuals. The main reason is regarding the health and wellbeing. We can maintain good personal hygiene by showering regular, washing hair and using anti-perspirant deodorants can all help kill harmful bacteria’s that could lead to health risks and illnesses. These products also prevent odour build up, that can lead to unpleasant smells. These may in turn impact on the individuals lives.

There can be underlying personal factors in an individual that may be a cause of poor personal hygiene. These range from physical and mobility issues, to physiological and financial issues. These are explained below.

Physical Factors
Many individuals understand the importance of personal hygiene but are unable to complete all the tasks required by themselves, paraplegics and amputees may have great difficulty in keeping personal hygiene to a high standard and may require assistance. Individuals with learning disabilities or mental health problems may not fully understand the importance of personal hygiene, and support workers would need to prompt the individuals to carry out personal care, informing them of the importance of maintaining high levels of Personal Hygiene. Individuals may experience temporary physical immobility such as suffering from broken bones, or recovering from an operation. In this case, family, friends or support workers can give support to them.
Individuals with mobility issues such as back problems or arthritis, may not be able to get in and out of showers and baths with ease, in this situation, individuals should be supported and assisted when required, using aids such as grab bars and slip proof mats.
Psychological Factors
Any mental health problem can affect a person’s ability and motivation to care for their personal hygiene needs. Anxiety, schizophrenia, Depression and other illnesses are known to possibly affect an
