In the Unit three summative text, there are two articles, “Take a Book Wherever you go” by Joan Aiken, and “Benefits of Audiobooks” by Denise Johnson, that both use persuasive techniques. But, “Benefits of Audiobooks” by Denise Johnson is more persuasive. Johnson claims that audiobooks will have a positive impact on all kinds of students. Her use of evidence, bandwagon appeal, and reason and logic make it apparent that the reader should take her side.
One persuasive strategy the author used was evidence. Johnson uses this strategy when she said: “ In many cases, audiobooks have proven successful in providing a way for these students to access literature and enjoy books.” This supports the author’s claim because this shows that audiobooks have in many cases been useful. Johnson mentions that audiobooks have worked in the past in a certain scenario, so there is no reason why they should not work in future situations as well.

The author uses this strategy when they said “Varley (2002) states, "If one thing has struck me about the way people describe listening to audiobooks, it is the reported intensity of their absorption and the emotional grip of the experience. 'They go right to your soul,' says one listener.” This supports the author’s claim because it shows that other people, not just Johnson, feel that audiobooks are a positive thing for young readers. This is important because readers like to know what other people believe that whatever someone is writing about isn’t just them. This makes the author credible because it shows that they are not
Today, one can see the tactic of persuasion being used as a standard avenue to influence a person’s attitude or beliefs by presenting them with different messages that encourage things like using certain brand name products, vote a certain way, or where to take a vacation just to name a few. There are four types of people that include gullible people, skeptical people, firm believers, and people who are leaders who trust others as well as make others follow their ideas. Persuasion is a widespread topic of social psychology and may be done in different ways. There are two types of cognitive processes by which to persuade someone, which are the central route or the peripheral route. For this assignment I used mostly the central route approach as well as using a little of the peripheral route approach. In the book Just Mercy, written by Bryan Stevenson, named one of the best books of the year by multiple newspapers such as The New York Times, Stevenson talks about how the justice system affects those who are less fortunate and minorities. Bryan Stevenson is an attorney who, at the time, was pretty young. He founded the Equal Justice Initiative. This organization defends the poor, the wrongly condemned, and those trapped in the justice system. The biggest client and one of the first was Walter McMillan, sentenced to death for a murder he did not commit.
In the passage “Why Literature Matters,” Dana Gioia uses facts and statistics as well as strong word choice and tone to help persuade the audience.
“It is not often that someone comes along who is a true friend and a good writer. Charlotte was both,” (White 184). What made Charlotte a good writer was not her innate ability to weave a web, but her ability to weave a beautiful text. Texts of any sort are persuasive, just as Charlotte needed to use her web’s words to persuade people that Wilbur was more than just bacon. Throughout the book, E. B. White uses persuasive methods in order to make the reader feel and believe the same things he does.

Hauser covers a plethora of details on how to create a well-made persuasive argument in his book, an Introduction to Rhetorical Theory; however, he covered three specific essentials that are necessary for persuasion: the components logos, pathos and ethos; purposive discourse and rhetorical competence; identification. “I now walk into the wild” stated Chris McCandless, as he is about to make the worst decision of his life. Chris was just your average rich suburban kid when one day he decided to flip his whole world around, Chris decided to leave his whole life behind and to go live off the land in Alaska. Chris tried to do the impossible, and failed terribly. For all i know the only people living off the land are tribes and people in third world countries, these people would switch lives with chris in a heartbeat! Chris never realized how lucky he was to have an education (not just your average education either, he attended Emory), a home, and people that love him. In my eyes chris killed himself with his stupidity. He lacked knowledge of the wilderness, and he never got to prove his point. Although he followed his dream, he died which proves that you cannot live your life off of the land. Chris was a fool because he was not prepared to go into the wild and because he hurt a lot of people emotionally while gone.

He begins by giving an example of a “small error” that ended up costing Amazon over $160 million dollars. He then lists more examples draws them forward to present his idea of perfection. The examples show how one tiny error can have an enormous impact and he turns to the audience asking “why we cannot achieve perfection?”. He draws the listeners in by giving personal experience in striving for perfection. “Look, a hundred people die everyday due to vehicular crashes. Think about that for a second.
