The Japanese are an ancient people whose history dates before Common Era, and may date farther back than we can possibly know. Their history is full of civil wars, invasions, and conquering other nations, so it was essentially a war fueled country. Yet one should not think of the Japanese people as barbaric warriors who only fought for fun, as they fought for survival. The Island of Japan does not have a lot of natural resources, so the Japanese took to warfare to feed their families and support their country. Now Japan has evolved into one of the most advanced countries around, with a life expectancy at 83!these facts on Japan were found on the website of United Nations Development Programme Human Development Reports. This type of physical environment is a particularly healthy one with people being exposed to trees and fresh air blowing in from the sea rather than the smog staying overhead like some gloomy cloud that we are accustomed too in Southern California. Since most of the country is covered by mountains it is extremely hard to farm, so people took to the sea to find food, and with that Japan had created a food so unique it is still eaten today and that is sushi. Sushi became such a popular food due to the idea of its freshness, meaning that the fish is still fresh since it is served raw to you, and as Americans we tend to associate freshness with healthiness. With this idea of having a healthy body the Japanese are one of the healthiest countries as Benjamin H Senauer in his writings of Why Is the Obesity Rate So Low in Japan and High in the U.S.? Some Possible Economic Explanations “Only 3.6 percent of Japanese have a body mass index (BMI) over 30, which is the international standard for obesity, whereas 32.0 percent of Americans do. A total of 66.5 percent of Americans have a BMI over 25, making them overweight, but only 24.7 percent of Japanese.” This has to deal with the fact that Japanese children walk or take other modes of physical transportation places, for example; bikes, skateboards, roller skates, or just simply running. These types of healthy habits are kept throughout adulthood and are
Japan first started out as an isolated nation, but soon it would become one of the most powerful countries during WWII. But before Japan was a powerful Nation, it needed to modernize. According to document 1, Japan was isolated from 1635-1853.1853 to 1854.This was when US Commodore Perry visited Japan and forced them to open their ports(document 1, N.d, timeline. As a result of this, the Japanese create the Meiji Restoration. According to document 5, the emperor is given the power to command the Army and the Navy end to rule over Japan, but the citizens too have a house of representatives( Alfred Stead,1904, Doc 5).
Intimacy versus isolation is stage six in Erik Ericksons eight stages of human development. This stage takes place from approximately 19-40 years of age (Orlofsky, Marcia, & Lesser, 1973). The big question that people face in this stage is will I be loved or will I be alone. During this stage people start to develop more long term relationships. Friendship, dating, marriage and family play a big role in the happiness of this stage. This is when we leave the people that we grew up with and start our own lives. By establishing
Japan was a very nationalistic country in which the purpose of the civilians was to fight until death for their emperor. This was evident in the fact that they had practiced an extremely nationalistic concept of Bushido. This concept made surrender unacceptable for all Japanese people and they lived to die for the emperor. There nationalism was fueled by the fact that they won 2 large battles (Sino Japanese War and Russo Japanese war) against larger countries. Along with this, the Japanese also had Kamikaze pilots who suicide by deliberately crashing planes into American warship as a tactic of fighting. This extreme nationalism shows that they could not be fought with regular weapons and so posed a threat for the whole world.
Japan is a small island nation off the coast of Eastern Asia. Despite its size, Japan has proved to be formidable both economically and militarily. Since the expedition of Commodore Matthew Perry in 1853 opened up the past feudalistic and reclusive Japan, this nation has expanded and adopted many imperialistic policies as well as taken a more aggressive military stance. Japan has changed in many ways, but has also continued upholding traditional practices throughout 1853 and 1941.
13, 2015) CBC News, What's the secret to Japan's slender population? Serious 'eating education'). This is due to the schooling systems in place in both countries. In Japan its mandatory to have cooking and showing and babysitting for both genders, for ages 11-18. Where here in Canada these important life classes are only an elective, making lots of Canadians less likely to cook for themselves, when they grow up do to they easier habit of just buying food. This is in fault of the school system due to the society having never really learnt how to cook for them self. This is not the case in the city's that have it mandatory for a few years. In large cities such as Vancouver and others in the lower main land, they have the obesity rate lower than in the northern British Columbia Center Canada. (Figure 1 (http://www.statcan.gc.ca/pub/82-624-x/2014001/article/11922-eng.htm#a8 )). In this figure you can see that, Canadian's that have adopted a more Asian school system, prolonging towards healthy living and local foods, are less obesity then the general public. Asian culture have healthy eating habits in their school system and education on good eating habits and local food, where here in Canada we have the easy option of just a burger and fries, and are less focused on local foods, but this seems to be slowly starting to change. Just Before entering World War II, Japan had a lot of different issues to try and solve. It had started to depend more for materials like oil for new machines being made to make the creation level of merchandise faster, which makes for a more productive economy. They required oil from outside sources in light of the fact that their property did not have all these things enormously, since the nation was an island its regular assets were made up of rice and fish. Even with these troubles, Japan started to manufacture an effective realm with a strong mechanical establishment and a decent armed force and naval force. The military got to be included in the legislature, and this started to cause them harm. The general public started to see indications of control originating from a rough place this put the individuals in a controlled state, their fundamental rights were gradually being taken away. In the mid 1930 's, the Japanese Army had numerous little, detached fights with their neighboring people groups. The Japanese individuals spread their control to make their country bigger. In 1937, the contentions started again with the Chinese in the territory close. These contentions prompted a full-scale war known as the second Sino-Japanese War. This was viewed as a bleeding war, it proceeded until the last annihilation of Japan in 1945. This demonstrates the inward shortcoming of the Japanese individuals, with high
Many human development specialists have examined memory loss of adults later in life. During the past fifty years, there have been many studies in children’s cognitive development and earlier childhood memory loss. Ernest G. Schachtel conducted studies on why people forget childhood memories as they grow older. He described the processes that could be involved in early memory loss (Crain, 2005). He was influenced by Sigmund Freud’s cognitive theory (Crain, 2005). Lev S. Vygotsky, however, described children’s early memory development as a holistic process that involved society, physiological, cultural, and economical environments. (Vygotsky,
Japans history dates back almost 53,000 years and is filled with interesting and fascinating events. Most of Japans actions have left the major world powers in the world stunned. The base of this amazing country is astonishing just by itself. The base is a bunch of active and large under water volcanoes. Japans uniqueness from the rest of the world ranges from its culture to its very interesting history to the change in government every few hundred years and their trading dilemma with petroleum and their assortment of fish that they export. Japan as a country is so very appealing and kind compared to the rest of the world its no wonder that it’s geographically separate from the rest of the world.
In comparison, it is evident that life expectancy in Japan is higher than in the U.S. and the same applies to child mortality where Japan records lower infant deaths. Apparently, the United States spends a lot of funds to cater for the health of a single person, thus spending much of its GDP on healthcare as compared to Japan. Evidently, Americans are more prone to lifestyle diseases such as obesity, which happens to be common among young people as well as the older generation.
Before the mid-1850’s, Japan used to be isolated from the rest of the world to avoid colonization because of Tokugawa Shogunate. This did make the country come together and endure that way of life for many years. However, this made the country weak and extremely susceptible to attacks, since having a variety of weapons, such as guns, was a rarity for them. After a threat from Matthew Perry, a commodore of the U.S. Navy, Japan went through the Meiji Restoration. During this short period, Japan sent armies all over the world to learn what other nations have to offer and copy tactics and techniques they know will work best for them. Everything within the nation, including the government system, education system, and army, is improved so Japan becomes a wealthy and strategic nation. Eventually, Japan goes to war with China and Russia, defeating both and staying a strong nation. Japan and its people knew they were better because they had gone through the Meiji Restoration in a short period of time and defeated both China and
Compared with the average American with 25 or bigger BMI, the average Japanese only has 24.7 (Senauer & Gemma, 2006). The average Japanese eats 200 calories less than the average American. The average American adult male eats 2,673 calories and the average American adult female eats 1,785. Food prices may cost much more in Japan but the Japanese observe dietary and healthier eating habits. They are also far more active and perform planned physical exercise than Americans. Walking is also more habitual to them. One reason is that driving is costlier in Japan and public transportation quite convenient (Senauer & Gemma).
Prior to World War Two Japan had been going through an economic crisis and was having issues with its government. The Japanese society was very militaristic and prideful making it a key power in world affairs. Their people have a strong and deep seated loyalty to their country.
Starting in the sixteenth century: Japan’s medieval period ended in late sixteenth century due to western weaponry that warlords were introduced to by Francis Xavier. Warlord Tokugawa Ieyasu took over and, for over 260 years, led a politically stable, peaceful, and prosperous dynasty. In 1868, the Tokugawa dynasty surrendered authority to the imperial court which resulted in the Meiji Restoration, starting the nation’s modernization. This included “creating a strong centralized state, building a modern military, avoiding European colonization, beginning expansion to other parts of East Asia, and launching industrialization and economic development.” Because of industrialization after the 1870s, Japan’s military grew extremely strong. Skipping forward to when America dropped the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan surrendered and began rebuilding their government, with economic growth and social stability being their main goals. “Japan today is a highly urbanized society.”`1
Japan is considered at this moment one of the most important countries in the world in terms of political power and the third largest national economy after the United States and China as per the 2011 figures. The development of the Japanese economy to reach such a status happened in time and especially after the Restoration of the Meji Dynasty in 1868. Since then, Japan was in constant contact with the western world especially with the United States.
Japan, one of the great powers of the world, which just 200 years ago, was an undeveloped nation moving along at a speed drastically less than that of the rest of the world. How was it then, that Japan was able to industrialize and modernize so quickly in such few years, even with its centuries of traditional protocol and isolation from the world? Even through the country’s complete destruction from World War 2, and having to start from basically ground zero in terms of its industries and social advancement, Japan was able to quickly rise up and become on the world’s largest technological and industrial powerhouses.
