He goes on to explain that the barriers were enforced by immigration rather than the police, and he even goes on and states that the police wouldn't even bother them. He then mentions that when they were caught by the BP (border patrol) they were simply gathered to and held in a facility until a threshold was met, where they would then simply be sent back. He then dives into detail when regarding immigrants partaking in criminal activities rather than just crossing over. He states that “It was migracion who caught us and sent us back, if you committed an act, the police put you in jail. You just post bail and they’d let you go. But if you didn't do anything, the police wouldn't bother you” (110). It seems that the enforcement of immigrants back in the 50s was much more relaxed when compared to what it seems to be today. With the media (obviously stretched and dramatized) portraying our borders as some sacred fighting ground guarded by active snipers and trigger happy gunmen it seems that there was a huge difference in how the border was enforced. National Guard involvement on the Southwest border began in 2006, when President George W. Bush authorized National Guardsmen to augment the under-staffed CBP through “Operation Jump Start,” a joint collaboration between CBP, the Army and Air National Guard, and the National Guard Bureau. Illegal immigrants have always been a problem in the United States for some time now. “In October 2008, the illegal immigrant population stood at 11.9 million according to the Pew Hispanic Center” ("Illegal Immigration Facts & Statistics”). Border corruption is currently a top priority for the FBI. While the majority of border protection officers are honest, a single corrupt individual puts the the safety of the United States in danger. Weakness in our borders allows terrorist and smugglers, as well as thousands of illegal immigrants, easy entrance to the United States. Although border patrol is a need for any nation, their extensive acceptations to constitutional laws can often be taken advantage of. The mission of the U.S. border patrol should be to prevent illegal aliens, which are a threat to American society, from reaching their purpose. I feel that border security should be a priority and it is important to me because of the consequences we are currently suffering from and will continue to suffer from. We have decades of children that will depend on us to resolve these issues now rather than lay the burden on them. Even if Border Security is dealt with successfully, the radical terrorist threat will continue and will be able to be dealt with more easily because of the progress we will be able to make at home domestically as well. Securing our nearly 6000 miles of border between just the Canadian and Mexican borders not including our coastal shores and ports will be vital in many ways, such as national security and for a prosperous America.

The Finnish Border Guard has a comparable mission of securing a long land border with a much poorer country but I think it's a relatively elite force. The United States is trying to maintain global military commitments, needs good people to police our large cities (indeed, we need more and better of them), run FBI counter-terrorism and organized crime operations, etc. Unless we're prepared to seriously bump the border patrol in the list of public sector priorities, it seems to me that we'd be better off with a relatively small but high-quality force than with a large one riddled with problems like the recruit who "was recently ejected from the training academy after being arrested in a gun smuggling case."
