I was inspired by the content this week so much so that I incorporated digital storytelling into the UNIV 100 course I am teaching. One of the requirements for the course is to attend four outside events and write a one-page paper about each experience. The third paper is due within two weeks, and students have tended to dread the activity, waiting until the last minute to decide on the event and submit the paper.
After reading the Fletcher and Cambre article, I decided to change the parameters for the assignment. Several parts of the article resonated with me, but one part in particular affected me: “Learning in university is in many instances experienced as a withdrawal from larger issues of life, an isolating and inward-focused practice.”
While revising her course composition, Nathan focused on the implied assumptions that were integrated into how she had structured the course. She quickly realized how, before her year as a student, she had not considered the other classes students had in between her class periods, and had included articles that did not effectively contribute to learning in the class. “The answer to the problem of reading that I now favor is to hone the assignments to those I will actually employ in my classes while at the same time creating new classroom forums for making direct and immediate use of the readings I seriously want my students to prepare” (R. Nathan, 2005, p.138). Within the rest of the section “Re-entry: The Student as Teacher”, Nathan continued to talk about how other professors should try to comprehend the actual impact that academics have on students, and that assignments that do not have much to do with important course material will most likely go undone. Another way that this experience altered Nathan’s reference to student life is that she gained a sense of compassion to the students that might fall asleep in her class, or start pulling out a snack in the middle of a lecture.
First Year Seminar is a beneficial, getting started-like course provided by West Coast University during the first term of the program. Since the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program is very rigorous this course is helpful in adjusting new students, such as myself, to a very demanding, fast-pace program. This class focuses on topics that help students organize and understand oneself and the mission of WCU mission to achieve the greatest success as a student. In my Signature Assignment term paper I will focus on my experience with FYS and what information I’ve gained to help me understand my learning style, strengths and weaknesses I have as a student, how working collaboratively benefits me and how I will go about achieving success at WCU.
Ever since I've sat for my JUE 100 final examination paper couple of months ago, I've noticed that my use of English language has improved. Firstly, I've found that my writing skills are noticeably better in comparison prior to taking the exam, this as due to JUE 100 continuous assessment which promotes writing an essay in certain length that taught me to express and organize my thoughts. Next, my speaking abilities improved as well since my vocabulary expanded and I'm able to use appropriate terms to speak with my colleagues. Thirdly, my reading skills improved bit by bit since now I'm able to skim and scan to find crucial information in any news article and save time. Finally My confidence level has increased and I'm able to speak in public
First, the physical self on the medicine wheel consists of how well one is meeting their physical needs. Fulfilling these needs helps to maintain a healthy body and consist of adequate oxygen/air quality, water, food, exercise, rest/sleep, shelter, and clothing. (Eden & Golanty, 2004; Mussel, 2005). Personally, due to where I live and my socioeconomic status I can fulfill these needs. However, I do not because it is difficult to find balance in my life. On most days I do not consume enough nutritious food or drink enough water. Instead, because it is available, I eat a lot of junk food which causes me a lack of energy throughout my day. Another deficiency that affects my energy level is my lack of sleep. I get enough rest throughout the
The presentation indicates the results of PAMS, which reflects to my own, and others’ perceptions towards my management skills. To be honest, before attending this class, I am very proud of my past performance and even self-definite to be a manager at the age of twenty-three, and as my boss/father would say, that I am "being the right person doing right things and in right ways", though most often trying to be as humble as possible while wearing workout clothes to our small office in DTC. However, after finishing the Personal Assessment of Management Skills (PAMS), as well as comparing the result with the reports from the PAMS Associates (one current employee and one past coworker/good friend for the survey) and with the average of the
US 101 is all about readings, having discussion and research. When discussing readings there is no wrong or right answer. Everyone has different opinions and ideas they took away from the readings. The research papers tied in with the in class readings. Picking a topic that connected with a reading and arguing for or against the topic was the main part of the paper. Presenting about who you are started off the beginning of the semester. At the end of the semester we ended by presenting a research topic that we were passionate about. US 101 pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me a lot.
I Leslie Garrera would like use this portfolio as an opportunity to have the two English courses at Marywood fulfilled. After high school, I received my associates degree for medical assisting and graduated cum laude in which I took COM 1101 Interpersonal communications, ENG 1101 English Composition l, and SOC 1101 Information Literacy. These courses provided me with a high level of language skills. I also took American sport history my first semester at Marywood which included a fifteen-page research paper that I received a high grade on. I bring this to your attention as I was the only freshmen in the class all others were juniors or seniors and I was able to achieve an outstanding grade as they did after taking both English classes. I
Organizational behavior studies human behavior in organizational settings and the influence and impact individual behavior has on the workplace. To provide a personal perspective of personality characteristics, the International Personality Item Pool (IPIP) assessment was used to measure aspects of my personality and how these traits relate to working with others and life within an organization. Key observations provide specific insight into how these are applied to workplace behavior and interactions with others. Personal self-reflection related to workplace behavior is offered, including lessons learned to assist in becoming a better employee, coworker, and/or manager, and how the Holy Spirit has assisted in transforming weaknesses
What are some of your earliest memories? Are they mainly joyful or painful? Identify one specific early memory and reflect on the significance this early recollection has for you. What value do you see in the Adlerian technique of having group members recall their earliest memories? Can you think of ways to use this technique in groups you may lead?
Throughout this year in college an important challenge I faced was getting through the two semesters of Physics that I needed to fulfill my pre-med requirements. Having last taken physics freshman year in high school and only covered very elementary material, I realized very early on in my first semester that this was going to be my most difficult and time-consuming class. As a result of lacking a solid background of physics from high school, I began going to office hours two to three times a week and staying on top of the material. I then began to give myself more than enough time to complete assignments so that I could go to office hours and conceptually understand difficult concepts such as Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, electrical circuits,
Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.
This self-assessment and Reflection Paper is about the questions on page 109. The main arguments are ontological, teleological, and ontological.
I have been teaching writing for many years. As a result, I have a variety of papers for students to write that I know are possible for third graders to write. In addition, each year and group of students is different so I adjust the papers they write based on the level of the group and the needs of the individual student.
I have gone through various phases in my life not realizing how my behavior could have been affecting others. I never paid attention to my leadership skills. Even though my personal assessment resulted in me being a guardian in the Kiersy Temperament Sorter (kiersy, n.d.), I never seen the leadership skills I possess. In my years of experience, I have found myself being more optimistic in business and personal relationships. I may fall into the category of Theory Y with characteristics of Likert’s participative leadership style, as well as a servant leader. Being a servant leader may compliment my participative leadership style described in Donald Clark’s Survey of Leadership Style (Clark, n.d.) in a sense of me being a student that become an instructor; I understand what it takes because I have been the learner before the instructor.
I am now approaching the conclusion of my college career and starting to adjust to work life. This is a period of self-reflection and an attempt to put everything I learned into perspective. During this period of my life, I have been constantly thinking and contemplating my future. I feel very anxious yet nervous during this time while I am adjusting to this new stage of my life. When I was in High school my life was very structured, because I could be very dependent on peoples help and I obviously still lived with my family. When I went to college, I had to break away from that feeling of dependency and start the adjusting to adulthood. In college there was more responsibility and I started to become more independent. This was a crucial step in my life but choosing a career is going to be an even bigger step. It is a bigger step because; I have to start structuring my career goals and family goal for the future. At this moment all I can think about is my career, and how I can I keep improving myself for work life.
