I think one of the main universal truths is decision making. Everyone has to make decisions whether they like it or not and in Of Mice and Men a lot of bad decisions were made. Everyone has to learn how to make good choices and if they don't then how to learn from them. Another universal truth I think is in this book is how to make sacrifices. George made a lot of sacrifices for Lennie even though he didn't like it most of the time. Everyone has had to have made at least one sacrifice in their life and probably still will have to. One universal truth that I know I use everyday is friendship which involves making both decisions and sacrifices. George and Lennie were very close and good friends. They both made bad decisions on their friendship
Steinbeck’s Literary Elements One thing that makes literature so unique is the different styles authors use to narrate a story. Authors create these styles with literary elements, using them to indirectly convey an idea. These elements, if used properly can attract a reader’s attention and make an enjoyable and suspenseful story. John Steinbeck knew how to apply these elements to make a great book.
In “ A Modest Proposal”, Jonathan Swift mainly targets two audiences: one being the English who were purchasing all the land in Ireland and the Irish themselves. After he wrote his proposal, the English purchased about 90 percent of the land, causing rent to increase thus, a difficulty for farmers to pay for rent, and a struggle to provide for their families. Since Irish families were larger in size, it was of great difficulty to care for every individual, hence the number of beggars rose dramatically. In addition, the English parliament ratified laws that restricted rights of the Irish living in their native land. More importantly, Swift attacks the English for their prejudice and political injustices, as well as displeasement with
The 1968 film version of Romeo and Juliet is more tightly; aligned to what Shakespeare intended in consideration of the setting, Juliet’s impression, and verbal exchanges. When analyzing each film, it is clear to see the same plot, just portrayed differently. To begin, the settings of both films took place at the Capulet’s home where Romeo came to meet Juliet. While the 1968 film took more of an authentic path, the 1996 film took an modern path. In the 1996 film, the main setting was the pool, which strays from the play because it is the balcony scene.
Man vs Man : It is Man vs Man when Curley tries to fight Lennie. Although Lennie didn’t want to fight, he was told to. “He slashed at Lennie with his left, and then smashed down his nose with a right.” (30)
Throughout, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, their are hard decisions that the characters don’t want to make, but need to. Even though they don’t want to, it is a necessity that they do, or situations that are not wanted could happen. Especially George has to make many decisions throughout the book that are very difficult or to prevent from creating a bigger problem. Some of his decisions were larger than others, but some even if they didn’t seem very important were just as important in the long run.
The Catholic Church was a dominant and powerful foundation represented throughout The Canterbury Tales and through the Medieval Era. The majority of religious figures in the story portrayed characteristics of unscrupulousness and deceitfulness which emerged from the corruption of the church. The exception is the Parson; who is an accurate symbol of what the Clergy should be, unlike the Friar who neglects to pursue his missionary. For instance both men act in contrast of each other and illustrate both the admirable and the sinful appearance of the clergy. Throughout the tales these two men and their polarity are presented on accounts of their obligations of the clergy, charitable nature, and their lifestyles.

"If an author does not have at least one great popular success, he or she may well be ignored by the media, but if he or she is constantly popular, then the critics become suspicious of the writer's serious intentions" (Benson Introduction). “The greatest writers and the best readers know that literature is not always mere sugar candy;it can sometimes be a strong medicine:sour perhaps-at least to the untrained taste - but necessary for continued health” (1). A statement written by Professor Thomas Scarseth shows how without value in books, a reading life would never reach its intended purpose. By learning to apply knowledge that books provide through characters, we can improve ourselves as individuals. This particular book, Of Mice and Men, has values such as linguistics, sociological value, and historical value. Linguistics are shown through Steinbeck’s use of poetic devices such as imagery and repetition. Sociological value is given through the perspective of Crooks, who shows the struggle of achieving the great American Dream of having a place to call your own. Finally, historical value is provided through racism and how it affected Crooks, or any other black man at the time.
