According the Merriam Websters dictionary; aggression is angry or hostile behavior or feelings against another country, government etc. Aggression affects college students in many ways, whether it be aggression towards their peers, parents or school assignments. Sites like tumblr, facebook and instagram can sway how an individual is feeling with the swipe on a finger.The significance of this research project will better my own and others understanding of a more unconventional way a college student may be affected by unneeded aggression and stress. In our society today, social media is a monster because it has created unrealistic social expectations and unhealthy relationships with ourselves and others. Social media has become a central platform to everyone in our society today and can cause many problems for a large portion of the users. Many of the problems that associate with social media can cause mental and physical harm to users such as, depression, which can lead to suicidal thoughts or actions, eating disorders, and even lowered self-esteem due to the unreasonable comparisons that people make when compared to popular and successful people. One major issue that social media has brought up is the exploitation of the anonymous identification which bullies use to hide from their victims. This can single handedly cause the issues that was recently stated. The social media crowd is now influencing young teens and kids to do drugs. It causes a sort of pressure for some adolescents to engage in illegal activities such as, smoking and drinking. This can be a real danger because they are too young to realize what they are doing to their bodies and could truly put their lives in danger. Social media also causes a learning deficiency in a large portion of students. These students are constantly on their phones and it takes their full attention away from the task at hand. The article I chose to review is “Sex differences in aggression: What are the psychological mediators?” written by Professor Anne Campbell of Durham University. To begin, she discusses research that supports the theory that men are more directly aggressive than women, but gets more specific by investigating the psychological mediators that may underlie this sex difference in aggression. She begins by discussing the effects of provocation and emotional arousal on aggression. A study conducted by Knight, Guthrie, Page and Fabes (2002) proposed that at low and intermediate levels of arousal, men’s emotions were not as greatly affected, but at intermediate and high levels of arousal they were much more affected. With that being said, these sex differences could be due to women’s lower level of impulsion or their superior aptitude for suppressing anger through aggression. Campbell states that the strength of fear and impulse are likely to be the emotions on which aggression depends. The question is, do men and women differ in the strength of their anger (impulse) or in fear-related inhibition (restraint) (Campbell, 2006).
Aggression is a complex issue to contextualise as it can mean both hostile, attacking behaviour and verbal behaviour with intent to cause harm. However, aggression may also be reactionary in response to environmental factors. Teenage aggression arises from negative environmental influences during upbringing. The roles of peers, family and media shape these environmental influences which include: bullying, abuse in the home, and violent video games.
First, an adequate description of the subject’s behavior and actions are needed to determine an appropriate response to the situation. Is the subject resisting? Is the resistance passive or active? Is the subject aggressive? Is there any attempt to comply? All of these questions would have to be interpreted in person to gauge how best to respond.
I like how you discussed how certain disorders or mental illnesses could affect how violet video games and violence in the general media could influence levels of aggression differently than individuals who do not suffer from said disorders or illnesses. Although research suggests that disorders such as Autism, depression, or Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) do not directly increase individuals risk of aggression after playing violent video games, this is not to say they are not a contributing factor. It is important to keep in mind that there are typically many contributing factors in causing someone’s aggression, media violence only be one of those factors.
