Professionalism has a different meaning to everyone. To me it is defined as "the skill and good judgment that is expected from a person who is trained to do a specific job." As an EMS provider, I will be in contact with the public that is looking at me to be the best in my profession. They will expect me to carry myself in a professional manner. They will also expect the best care that I can provide, and that I can acknowledge when I need to call for ALS personal to render better care if needed.
In many situations, I will have to work with other EMS providers, Fire Fighters, and Police Officers. The way I conduct myself around them plays a large roll in the profession. To act in a professional manner around other service personel I would be sure to watch my language, avoid harassment, and refrain from unnessacary criticism. Acting in a professional manner is espcially important when it comes to providing the best care for the patient.

To maintin the upmost professional appearance, I must always provide the best care within my scope of practice, give the patient piece of mind regardless of the scenario, and take charge of any situation that is thrown my way. Additionally I need to carry myself as if am always on duty for the fact that at any point in time I can be called to help the people within my community.
Whether I am on duty or not I should still maintiain a professional appearence and attitude. This is because I could run into an emergency situation any where I go. What does Professionalism mean to me? Professionalism in my term means it is someone who is very dedicated to their profession. It is an important and great decision to follow by the rules and ethics of professionalism. If we did not have anyone that cared about their profession it would cause a lot of problems in our society today. It could cause a lot of disruption in your workplace. In order to abide by professionalism you must take pride in your job, percieve realistic goals and values, and know what your expectations are.

You help build and maintain a culture that facilitates professionalism. As a leader you do not participate in workplace pranks. Another important aspect of professionalism is honor and integrity. To have honor and integrity in the workplace you need to be forthcoming with information; and not hold important information for your own benefit. You can admit your own errors. You deal with confidential information discreetly and appropriately. One of the most important attributes regarding professionalism is respect. You have to respect institutional staff and all staff representatives. You have to respect patients rights and dignity and their privacy and confidentiality. A person who is professional has to have caring, compassionate and have communication. You treat the patient as an individual taking into account lifestyle, religious beliefs, and ethnicity. I think it’s essential to your profession to be aware of your attendance, to work well with your co-workers, to practice dressing appropriately for your job, and to be attentive to your patients; this can transmit or be viewed as achievements. I practice these qualities of values by having proper etiquettes, thinking oneself as efficient in care, by my body language, maintaining a well-ordered body appearance, and maintaining eye contact with whom I was speaking to. First impressions are important when caring for patients, talking with families and understanding how staff reacts to me.
