The importance focussed on science is deadly has identified that value of human equality is treated poor. According to the texts I have studied these themes are common. In this essay I will be discussing the connection between these texts Unwind by Neal Shusterman, flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keys, Divergent directed by Neal Burger and Gattaca directed by Andrew Niccole,
In the text Unwind it shows that the value of human equality is treated poor. The character Roland which was being unwound showed that no matter what type of person you are bad or good you aren’t treated any better. This example “Would you rather die or be unwound? “The reason why Shusterman put this as a quote, he wanted us to feel that in any way you live your life the value of equality can be treated like were worth nothing. The purpose of this was for people to stop and realize that if you were in a position like Roland would the value human equality mean something to you.

Charlie who is a retarded adult who is chosen by some scientists for an experimentally surgery to increase his intelligence. It shows that in his life it seemed as though a bunch of scientists just wanted him as experiment to see if works without him being consulted. In this quote” “Why am I always looking at life through a window?” The author is trying to tell us just because Charlie has a disability doesn’t mean he is different from anyone else. He should not feel like he does not belong which is what equality is not about. Both the authors had the same attention to show that both these characters life wasn’t treated like everyone else, they made us feel how different they were from the rest which made an impact on what our opinion was on the value of human
This quote is the resolution in Unbroken. After being rescued from Japan, the falling point of the book, Louie’s post-war life suffered from frequent flashbacks and nightmares and he struggled with alcoholism. He had secretly dedicated his life to killing his past tormentor, Mutushiro Watanabe, thinking it was the only way for him to move on. At one point, during one of Louie’s flashbacks, he began to choke his own child thinking it was Watanabe. His wife, Cynthia, had temporarily left him. However, after being talked into attending a sermon led by Billy Graham, he remembered his past promises to God. When Louie was lost at sea, he prayed for rain and promised that if rain was provided for him, he would dedicate his life to God. This quote
First off, I really liked your response due to the fact that I also addressed this question, and I was able to gain a different insight from your discussion board on things I did not include in my response. For instance, the way you explained how first point of view gave strength to the overall idea of history brining pride to many Chicanos not only showed great analysis, but also supported your argument regarding the character’s strong identification with his culture. You use a quote to support your answer and further analyze the quote and speak about the effect cultural heritage and history has on the person Joaquin is.
There are many more examples of un-equality as you near the end of the book. The three main characters spend the whole book trying to get to a “Refugee Camp” for survivors and those who are scared and need the safety it promises. Once there it becomes apparent that it is no safer or nicer in the Camp as it is anywhere else. In my opinion, reading this back from cover to cover will definitely change you, the main idea and several other smaller themes of this story are… surprising. You will never know the unfairity of living like that until you have either been put through it (something I would not want to do) or read about it, it shows how horrible the world can be if you are different and how terrible it can be, even to those whose innocence is greater than most others.
Out of the three main characters, Risa, Lev, and Connor, in Neal Shusterman´s novel “Unwind” I feel like I connect the most to Risa. In the book Risa is portrayed as a strong headed and intelligent girl. Not only is she intelligent she also has a gift of playing the piano. Even though i am not musically gifted in any way i am gifted in athletics. Throughout the story her cleverness and steadfastness has helped her in many ways.
I connect this book to my life because Equality wanted changed his life and do what he likes to do, and sometimes we are afraid of what other people is going to think about us, and we do not live our own lives for being afraid of what other people is going to think about us.
The young narrator named Equality 7-2521 battles internal and external conflicts in order to discover his individuality. When equality realizes he is different from the brothers, he is scared because he knows he will face the consequences. “Equality is six feet tall and is twenty one years old, he also learns quicker”. Equality Motivation is to be free in his society. Equality feels like he has to discover the world and find answers to everything. In the book it also states that “as I walked down this pitch black tunnel, I felt a chill go down my spin, Should I even be down there.” To equality the feeling of independence sparks the idea that he is his own being with his own image.
Unwind - Neal Shusterman In a world in which every move you make puts your life at stake, the ability to make crucial decisions is a necessity for survival. Neal Shusterman expresses his twisted version of reality through the novel, Unwind, in which the characters are faced with situations where the lives of others depend on their decision. This novel teaches readers how sometimes other people’s decisions can have a major influence on the lives of those around them.
Examination Day is a story where the government is in control of everything. The author of this story was Henry Slesar. Dickie is the main character in the story. In Examination Day the government required everyone to take a test on the day of their 12th birthday. The test he took was like an iq test.
Equal mind set, equal beauty, equal sight, equal weight, equal everything creating a dystopian society. Everything is equal creating a lack of power or power where there should not be. In this story people are forced to stay in low power and not show their abilities. The Government takes away their rights to make it “equal”. This puts them above.
Throughout the story, handicaps distracted the characters, and this affects their personality and individuality. For example, the character George has a
In the story, it is said that the ones with intelligence are given mental handicaps to keep them from having intelligent thoughts for too long and the ones who were beautiful, strong, and or athletic were given masks and weights which they must wear at all times. Also, during the time this was being written, people like Martin Luther King Jr and Malcolm X were fighting for human rights and the fact that they were not given fair opportunities was almost like they were handicapped. This evidence from the text shows how the handicaps could be used and the real-life surroundings of Kurt Vonnegut and what was happening in America around the time that this short story was being written shows how the government really does handicap certain groups of people to lessen the chance of them becoming successful people. The handicaps are still evident today because Americans and Canadians may like to think that all people have equal opportunities, but, the harsh reality is that women and people of colour are still not given the equal opportunities they deserve. This story also shows that through propaganda and the television, the government can brainwash
The Display of Discrimination “No change can come if those who are impacted the most by discrimination are not willing to stand up for themselves” (Zainab Salbi). In the novella Of Mice Of Men, written by John Steinbeck the idea of discrimination came through racism, sexism, and preys on those with mental and physical disabilities. Steinbeck introduces us to characters who face constant discrimination. Crooks, the stable buck is black; Lennie a huge migrant worker is mentally disabled, & Candy faces discrimination despite being kind because he is old & physically disabled. John Steinbeck uses the theme of discrimination throughout the book Of Mice Of Men to illustrate the injustices inflicted upon people with mental and physical disabilities, the elderly and people of different races.
Critical Analysis “In a perfect world everything would be either black or white, right or wrong, and everyone would know the difference. But this isn’t a perfect world. The problem is people who think it it (Shusterman 75).” Many problems are faced throughout the novel Unwind that deal with individuals doing what nowadays would be considered wrong and cruel.
For example everyone is equal. According to the text “ It’s no longer a “man’s world”. This shows that men are no longer our superiors we are all equal no matter our skin color or gender.
Kurt Vonnegut’s unique story “Harrison Bergeron,” displays a theme which is a warning about the dangers of equality, which is equality is a hindrance to an individual’s success and society’s success, but this hindrance is ironically, unequal. In the story, Harrison and his bride are arrested for their unwillingness and inability to stay within the bounds of equality enforced by the Handicapper General. Equality hinders the success of an individual like the weights hinder the beauty and grace of the ballerinas in the story. Equality doesn’t promote everyone to be equally better, but to be unequally worse. Handicaps are no use in ensuring equality, because one’s strengths will always shine through, such as Harrison’s strength and wit, or the
