Upon first glance of this image, a large shark is displayed that is enclosed in a rectangular tunnel-like space. It is unclear where exactly this space is located, however it is most likely not in an aquarium because the space is too small and there are no other fish, marine-like organisms, or marine characteristics around the shark. The shark is probably dead and preserved to be up on display because of the way his mouth is open and because of the white paneling surrounding the space he is confined to. Considering that the shark is in a museum, there must be something remarkable or idiosyncratic about him, such as his size, breed, capabilities, or place of death. Human beings may attempt to understand his death and what it was like, however could never really grasp or relate since their own death has not been reached. While humans may mentally comprehend, relate to, and be able to view death of living things around them, they are unable to completely know what it is physically like, which is portrayed in Damien Hirst’s work “The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living.” The title of his work gives more meaning to the artwork itself, which applies to titles of other pieces of art, poems, books, or movies, as well. Many people say “not to judge a book by its cover”, which is actually partly true. Giving the work a quick glance or just a look at the title is clearly not a fair way to judge, however the title is important because it gives way to what the creator was attempting to portray. The shark in the museum and its title both allow people to decipher what the shark itself and the title mean in various ways; however, if it was just the shark, the artist’s purpose would definitely not be depicted as well. At first glance, one may believe that the shark is in the museum because of something special about him, such as his age or any other specialities. Once the title is read, full meaning is given to the work and individuals see that the artist actually created it to portray the reason that death is incomprehensible to living individuals.
