Being from El Paso Texas I always felt like there was more for me in other cities, but I never really got the chance to see what even my own state had to offer, but that all changed when I got accepted into Upward Math and Science. It gave me the push I needed in order to embark on my journey of becoming a well-rounded person. It gave me the real life experience I needed to determine if I would make it on my own when I go to college. Now I am able to see myself living far away from my parents which is something I cannot say for many of my peers. Upward bound also awakened something inside me. Before the program I was filled with self doubt when it came to many things, but spending my summer in Arlington with fellow students and mentors all
I want to be in Upward Bound because I know it will help me get through college. It is a learning experience plus there’s an opportunity to meet new people and see different colleges. One of the things I marked when I filled the application out was that Upward Bound could help me with was study skills/study habits
There were a few opportunities that I was lucky enough to experience throughout my years of high school. One of my main opportunities that I will always remember as I work my way into building my career is job shadowing a cardiovascular ICU nurse during my junior year. It amazed me and inspired me into something that I would love to pursue in my future. I was able to do such a thing through the medical careers academy studying all about the body throughout the year. By that time I was already on my second year of the academy so I had a fairly good understanding of what was being taught.
University Writing Center (UWC) and Academic Success Center (ASC) are two of the university facilities that help students enrich their academic experience. While UWC assists students in improving their written and oral communication skills through one to one consulting sessions, online resources, and workshops, ASC works to enhance students’ intellectual performance through academic coaching, supplemental instruction, drop-in tutoring sessions, and peer mentoring. Both of the organizations take a collaborative learning approach to encourage students to develop necessary study skills for academic success and increase student retention. ASC offers various student development programs; however, our focus for this proposal will be on drop-in tutoring services offered by ASC.
I should be selected for one of the Upward Bound Programs at West Virginia State University because neither of my parents attended college for more than four years. My mother is currently attending college to become a registered nurse (RN), but she has not attended college for more than four years. I should be selected because, while I may not be a low income family, I know that I will need financial support when I am attending college.
I would like to help the amazing and talented students at Richfield High School before I graduate from Normandale Community College this year. This semester, I have strengthened my understanding of various coursework such as Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and Chemistry by tutoring in the Normandale Tutoring Center. I believe this will help me tutor the students more effectively than before. I also have acquired more leadership experiences through the Phi Theta Kappa and Leadership Through Service programs. I would like to share my advice with the senior Upward Bound students on the importance of campus involvement. All in all, it is my desire to help Upward Bound students achieve their academic goals and prepare for college life.
An experience in a biomedical research will help me to succeed in my long-term educational goals. My long-term goal is to attend a MD-PHD program at a Medical School. As a scientist, I would like to study the genetics of disease causing organisms and human genetics. Currently, I am studying Biochemistry at the University of Maryland, which I think will equip me with a knowledge of human biochemistry. However, since undergraduate schools mainly focus on theoretical not the practical application of most subjects, I need to participate in a hands on research project over the summer because It will give me an opportunity to apply my knowledge in a laboratory. This is when the summer research program at the University of Maryland school of medicine
There are plenty of people who want to move up in life, work harder and put more time in to their future plans and goals. According to "The Pew Charitable Trust", they state, "84% of Americans have higher incomes than their parents had at the same age, and across all levels of the income distribution, this generation is doing better than the one before it" (W.C.I 124). What they are implying is that today's generation still struggles with what class they may be in, but they work to make a difference. Today's generation may still be stuck in the same class but they are progressively moving up. At the same time, it may seem as if they are moving up, but they still struggle with that concept. They continually think that they are moving up by working
A good education is considered a part of the American dream. Education is believed to be a privilege in life that opens doors for your future. American education now has become very competitive and expensive dream that will hopefully accommodate a higher paying wage. Education pulls many families out of poverty like conditions into a better socioeconomic status. The value of education will always be the cornerstone of the American dream.
Happy New Year! How are you? I just wanted to update you. I applied for jobs through Americorps and landing one in Pittsburgh with a Non-profit called Higher Achievement. We are an affiliate to a national program. Higher Achievement aims to help middle school scholars from the Hill District and Homewood areas, prepare for High School and for placement in advanced programs and or top tier schools. I was hired to help recruit mentors for the scholars and create programming for alumni of Higher Achievement. I told my supervisors about my interest in communications and they offered me the opportunity to be affiliate Brand Manager and of course I took it! I'm happy to be getting my foot in the door. I hope you're doing well and looking forward to
A significant educational opportunity I have taken advantage of is being in AVID. I joined AVID so I can stay organized and be prepared for high school. I joined AVID in the seventh grade and have been in it ever since. I really wanted to stay organized and my older brother recommended this class to me. I am glad I joined AVID because I have met a lot of people and have been very organized and prepared for my classes. AVID has really helped me because of tutorials, study halls, and taking better notes in class to help me study better.
The widening achievement gap contributed to inequality of wealth in the classroom is a topic that educators tackle on a daily basis. In his article The Widening Income Achievement Gap, Sean Reardon discusses how, historically, lower income students have not performed at the level of higher income students (Reardon, 2015). What causes this disparity in academic achievement? Is it simply access to money that gives students from higher income families a leg up when it comes to school or are there deeper, farther reaching contributing factors?
I am thankful for the nomination to apply for the UTRGV Upward Bound internship. I am currently a junior at Lopez Early College High School, and I am taking human growth and development as well doing public services hands on my career pathway. I honest believe that I am an outstanding candidate to this internship because I am very dedication, responsible, determined and respectful. My goal is to seek a master's degree in administration and a minor in photography.
