Federalism is defined as the idea that power is divided by the Constitution between the national government and the state governments. Before this, governments were either confederacy or unitary models of government. A confederacy is when the member states make decisions, whereas in a unitary government the national government makes the decisions. That being said, federalism contains both unitary and confederacy governments. The Constitution, treaties and the federal laws are the supreme law of the land. Some powers, though, are delegated to the national government while others are reserved for the state governments. Still, other powers are concurrent, or shared, by both state and national governments. For example; Mexico has 31 states and 1 federal district the immigration laws are decided by the national government while many criminal laws are decided by the state government.

The federalist system of government is divided into the co-dependent central and state government. federalism in the united states give states the power to create their own laws, constitutions, and government structures. As stated in the U.S. Constitution (U.S.), enormous reservoirs of political power are thus derived from the people who reside in the states themselves. (champagne 2017)
The United States government operates under a federalist system meaning that there are two or more governments who share the same power over one geographic region. In this case it would be the state and federal governments. The 10th amendment of the U.S. Constitution summarizes the idea of federalism, stating that “The powers not delegated to the US by the Constitution, nor prohibited by the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people” (U.S. Constitution). This means that the federal government, whose jurisdiction is very limited, has jurisdiction over some thing while the state government has jurisdiction over

Today, the United States is a large country with a diverse population that creates a truly unique culture. The U.S. began as 13 small colonies on the Atlantic coast of North America. The United States Constitution established a form of government called federalism. In addition to the United States, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Germany, India, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria and Switzerland are all federalist governments.
