US Foods was founded in the 19th century by several entities and five generations of employees. Monarch Food is one such entity and is linked to a Dubuque, Iowa company that sold provisions for wagon trains heading west in the 1850’s. John Sexton and Company is another entity whose success began as a merchant for tea and coffee in Chicago in 1883 (http://www.usfoods.com).
Today, US Foods is one of America’s leading food distributors, servicing every area of the industry, from small restaurants to healthcare, employing about 25,000 people working in over 60 locations nationwide. There are a number of factors that impact food distribution, such as level of income, wealth and the distribution of equity, the rise of fuel costs, international relations, government subsidies, regulations and policies, to name a few.
The formation of jobs, rise in taxes, and levels of minimum wage, is a few of the causes affecting the level of income in the average household. These culprits greatly determine consumer demand for food and the amount of funds allocated to certain types of foods and prices. A two-earner household for example, is likely to spend more money on food than a one-earner household; understandably, households spend more money on food when income rises.
Fuel prices and food prices most often go hand in hand. In today’s “agribusiness”, fuel is a major source of production and distribution, from farm machinery, delivering operating supplies and necessities, to the end point, transporting to the consumer. During periods of high fuel costs, many companies add a fuel surcharge to their customer’s bills, thereby affecting the cost of the product to their customer and the price of the product to the consumer. Much of the local food movement is driven by the abundance of fuel necessary to feed the population, and is therefore becoming more prevalent in the food system.

Summary After viewing the film “food Inc.” the way I now view the American food industry and our government has changed. I now see the food industry for what it really is, a corrupt business empire that is protected by government officials and policies. In the film it pinpoints many different areas where the food industry has become an injustice to the citizens of America, they have also been protected by laws and policies, and also have treated the cattle, chickens, and other farm animals with such cruelty for profitable gains. Some of the areas where the food industry has become an injustice to its citizens is in the processing of mass food products that are not healthy, the advertising of products to fit the description of farm grown food

The documentary Food Inc. revolves around the manufacturing of products for our later on consumption. The inhuman ways in which we obtain these products and the economic down fall in which we base our normal everyday lives off of. The American population undertakes a huge risk when consuming these products due to the health hazards that Ignored and not shown to the consumer by the companies. The documentary is separated into segments that are taking a specific step to take the problem by hand, whether it is the production of meat, grain or vegetables.

The average American eats about 60,000 pounds of food during the course of their lifetime, but what is it exactly that we call food? And how much of it should we really be getting. The dictionary definition of food in a Merriam-Webster dictionary is “something that nourishes, sustains, or supplies.” Unfortunately almost all of the food Americans consume on a daily basses is treated, infused with or been feed artificial hormones, stimulants and steroids which would not abide by that definition. In a society where one can so easily be judged on the lifestyle choices they make which include what they eat and how much of it, the way the world utilizes and exploits its food supply is severely flawed. In order to improve the way Americans utilize their food supply, its necessary to make aware how food is produced, how excess food is dealt with, and how the misuse of food can have varied devastating results.
Food is the foundation of human live and people cannot survive without it. Food security is a vital issue facing the governments around the world. However, food shortage is becoming increasingly severe in this day and age. There are several reasons which led to the universal food shortage and they are interconnected to each other. Increasing world population, extreme weather and the wide spread use of biofuels are the main causes of worldwide shortage of food. These factors lead to food price rises rapidly.
Several different factors contributed to the increase in global food prices in 2011 and 2012, which stimulated a number of international responses. Global food prices have increased markedly since the early 2000s, reaching a historical peak in February 2011. Monthly changes in global prices for a given commodity are recorded using the Food Price Index by the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). The FAO Food Price Index comprises of the average price indices for cereals, oils and fats, fairy products, meat and sugar, and considers the price at which these food groups are sold and purchased globally. The Food Price Index increased from 89.6 in 2002 to 229.9 in 2011, an increase of more than 150%. Global food prices continued to escalate in 2012 when the Food Price Index grew by 8% between December 2011 and March 2012, just falling short of the February 2011 historical peak1. As food prices increased in 2011 and 2012, over 40 million people were forced into poverty2. This paper examines several factors which contributed to the global increase in food prices, including increased oil prices, increased biofuel production, adverse weather conditions and increased food demand. The responses to the spike in global food prices in 2011 and 2012 will also be discussed. The paper will also discuss some of the suggested responses to the increased food prices identified by the international community, such as increased agricultural production, productivity and reserves
Political factors impact the agricultural sector in factors relating to regulation, distribution, and consumption of foods in a given country. Government policies and imposed regulations have a direct effect on nutritional choices that a consumer makes, and this, in turn, affects the agriculture market (KPMG, 2012). For example, policies governing food prices or the amount of information that a consumer will receive affects the choice of the consumer. Food regulation and safety measures implemented influence the supply of food products, and ultimately determines the market choice for consumers (KPMG, 2012). Economic factors have a direct effect on the agricultural industry. On one hand, the input cost such as the price of seeds, fertilizers, and cost of labor affect the productivity of the industry. The economic status of a country also affects the industry’s productivity. For example, in developing countries, the agricultural sector is less developed owing to limited resource input and poor infrastructure (KPMG, 2012).
