The eternal struggle between good and evil unwavering as always. This battle has been seen throughout time and has been implemented into mass media. This revolutionary thought is used consistently. Light and dark imagery is used in stories to differentiate between good and evil. The entire premise of the story Beowulf is based upon one hero, Beowulf, attempting to eradicate evil. Whomever wrote Beowulf used light and dark imagery to create a visual representation of places and characters throughout the story.
Beowulf is a long narrative that contrasts light and dark. This story contains many key words that differentiate between the two based upon the mood of the story. Some words from Hrothgar that would lean towards a more happy tone, “And then, in the morning, this med-hall glittering/” (480-488) the author uses this line to show that the mead-hall is usually a happy and upbeat place. The phrase “glittering” shows that the mead hall is clean and constructed before Grendel arrives. It also shows that the mead hall was once bustling with many people gathered happily under one roof. …show more content…

This is used to balance the amount of light and dark. The dark undertone of this story can slowly become very graphic. Such as when Hrothgar’s utters the phrase, “With new light would be drenched with blood, the benches/ Stained red, the floors, all wet from that fiend’s/” (480-488), this shows the ability of the author to create images of death ,and how the once bustling and lively mead hall becomes a nightmare.
