Using SCCT’s Interest Model it is clear that Frank’s interest in storytelling as a young child was the first step toward his career path later in life (Lent, 2013). As he grew up and begin to participate in English classes where his own storytelling could be assessed, Frank received positive feedback which likely increased his self-efficacy regarding writing (Lent, 2013). Additionally, outcome expectations such as his work being well-regarded and being able to do something he enjoyed were met. At the same time, he was increasing and stabilizing his self-efficacy regarding this interest though he was struggling with his gender identity which he was not open about. This may have been what prevented him from going directly to college …show more content…
This then led him to develop a performance goals of entering college for his journalism degree (Lent, 2013). His performance in college further solidified his self-efficacy. Despite his disconnection from campus life and difficulty with his peers his outcome expectations related to his writing were met. His new performance goals are to graduate and become a freelance journalist, which continuing the Performance Model loop will hopefully lead to Frank attaining his desired performance level in his career (Lent, 2013). 2. Conceptualize Frank as an actor, agent, and author. What was his reputation and who were his guides and models? What transitions has Frank experienced in different areas of his life, and how do these contribute to his overall life theme? How would you use this theme to help Frank move forward? When Frank was in the actor stage as a child his parents were his guides, with his mother being a positive guide. His father was less available and therefore was a more neutral guide in Frank’s life. The love and support that he introjected from them likely played an important role in his coming out to them regarding his gender identity as an adult (Savickas, 2013). Additionally, his chosen role models may have been comprised of people wrote or told stories such as authors and newscasters as he loved storytelling at a young age. He incorporated these traits as he developed his
In the short essay, “Becoming a Writer,” penned by Russell Baker, he spoke of a memory from his past that later changed his perception of writing. After reading his piece, I reviewed the response questions listed below the essay to further my understanding of the piece. Almost like looking through a list of prompts as Russell did.
Mrs.Frank has courage when they have to go into hiding she fills in every one with courage as bad things happen threw out the time they live in the annex. She was frightened but also very sweet and generous when knew people came in. Mrs.Frank did not understand Anne that well but loved her very much and had courage in her daughters and family and friends no matter what condition they were in.
Early on McCarthy states the the point of this study and article is to, “Contribute to our understanding of how students learn to write in school.” (234). McCarthy literally wants to make the point that learning to write should be viewed as a growth process from both a social and individual aspect depending on the situation. (234). McCarthy observed a college student as he took three different courses composition I, poetry, and biology. McCarthy explains that through her examination of the the
Frank “kept a diary” where she just wrote all the “horror of war” but also through the changes of a teenager goes through and basically her childhood was not a typical childhood that now a days children have. They had a leader where at a certain time she was able to be outside, they were told what to eat and what not to, and just the fact that her parents had to leave her and her older sister at one of the people who he worked for. Anne Frank did not write other controversial book because basically her diary was just where she expressed her feelings and just what she was going through. However, many readers did take this novel positive because they took it as a “lesson” and did not care if it was to sexual or to violence or to depressing either way we live in a world where we have all those things happening , but she taught us how to fight it and protect ourselves from
Everyone on the planet has a goal set in life, but only a handful attempt to improve to obtain their goal by studying the subject their goal is in. In my English class, English 101 this quarter I was astonished by how much I had progressed as a writer sharpening my writing skills and also learned a lot about writing that I hadn’t learned before. In my writing portfolio for this quarter I had to write an autobiography essay, a research essay, and this reflection essay to develop my writing skills better. The writing assignments were fun to do because it challenged me to work on essays of different styles that were new to me. The essay assignments helped me grow as a better writer that gave me the self-confidence and skills to take on the world on my own.
If exceptional grades and numerous excellence awards are to indicate anything, I have succeeded academically thus far. However, such achievements are only possible because of my work ethic and determination. I pride myself on submitting my best work, pitting myself against my past performances. I remember my tenth grade English class; I was writing essays every week. I took every critique from my teacher and considered it for the next piece. Experience I gained from that class carried over into eleventh grade, where I achieved the highest English grade I have ever made. Even now, I look back at my older essays to help me write, so I know what works and what to avoid. Perseverance through school and desire to improve have carried me well, even through activities outside of my education.
After taking Honors Written and Oral Communication freshman year I have changed as a communicator. I have grown in many areas as a writer and speaker; however, I have also have skills that need improvement. From the Fahrenheit 451 essay to the six-word memoir, my writing capabilities and experience has changed. I have sincerely grown in certain areas whereas I have also fell short in other areas.
I chose my memoir for AP English Language and Composition as my best piece because it’s received a ninety percent and is the written work I’m most proud of. The reader should expect to find information about me that one wouldn’t know by simply looking at me. One will find how overcoming my own challenges and one that was thrown at me made the person I am today. One would discover my passion and determination to pursue a career in family law. The impressions I hope the reader gains about myself after viewing this piece is that I am a methodical writer as well as a psychological person who tends to hide it.
Writing daily started to become habitual during Wu’s junior year. Prior to this, Wu had no intentions of pursuing or having any involvement in journalism. As a matter of fact, He devoted much of his time as an underclassman involved in his school’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) program. However, it didn’t take long for him to realize that he didn’t want to pursue a career involved with STEM.
While reading “Shitty First Drafts” by Anne Lamott and “Journey as a Writer” by Yvonne Sui-Runyan I came to a discovery. Writing is terribly difficult for everyone, not just us college kids. I found that composing any sort of writing challenging for all of us and it is never just sugars and rainbows. This however, can be stressful for those of us who enjoy those things in our daily lives. Being said, after expecting to be thrown straight into a fire after reading these, I came to a suppressing conclusion. I was “okay” with my status as a writer. Not because of the crude humor in Lamott’s writing or the easy to understand structure in Sui-Runyan’s but, because it felt great to know that there are other people out there who are struggling to
The choices that Frank made, saved many Jews live. Germany send the Jews to the concentration camp. He did the right thing by saving other people.
Maybe that’s what I was born to put on the page, he thought.” This proves the importance of relaying the thoughts and experiences of their lines. Secondly, another main point of the article is that Frank was embarrassed about his poverty stricken, abandon filled life. McCourt said, “’When you have nothing—no TV, no radio, no music—you have only the language. So you use it. We were street kids—we saw the absurdity and laughed at it. And we were fools; we were always dreaming. Bacon and eggs—we dreamed of that’” (Kornbluth, 200). He doesn’t want to have to discuss his past life events, because he thought that it may cause his students to lose respect for him. But, as it turns out, this didn’t happen. The students had come from quite similar situations in their lives and could relate to McCourt’s experiences.
During the course of a person’s life, a decision is made as to which direction their life should follow. Most people are encouraged by their loved ones to make this choice for themselves. When Kelly Cherry was twelve, she announced to her musically devoted, string quartet violinist parents that she was going to quit piano lessons and become a writer, in response, “[her] mother said that she would rather kill [her] than have [her] turn out like [her] big brother, a beatnik. She ran to the kitchen to get [a] butcher knife” (“Kelly Cherry”). Needless to say, she was not supported in this career path. Throughout the course of her early writing career, she would hear that she “had no talent for writing” (“Kelly Cherry”). Still, she continued to write, occasionally quitting again and again, like a smoker, only to pick it up again (“Kelly Cherry”). Continually she told herself, “You are not a writer” until one day she revised this to, “If you don’t write your books, no one else will” (“Kelly Cherry”).
404) and these predictions are affected by self-efficacy, a concept that he describes as “our beliefs about our personal competence or effectiveness… which means it varies, depending on the subject or task” (p. 405). In Annie’s case, we can determinate that she does not have a high confidence in herself when it comes to writing skills or other school subjects. Her attitude can be based on previous negative experiences or the low self-efficacy in a specific task, in her situation is writing. However, she does state that she is more confident academically when the subjects are PE or art. Annie’s motivation in other areas may be high because she has better experiences and outcomes; therefore, since she is able to can set up higher goals in these subjects, she is less afraid of failure. If Annie gets helpo gain positive experiences in writing may also increase her self-efficacy in writing and other areas.
If you ever entertained any ideas about writing professionally, you will want to look at setting long-term goals as a writer. Create a big picture: what kind of writing will you be doing further down the road? Would you like to a published novelist with a library of books to your credit? Do you intend to be a nationally-acclaimed reviewer for cultural magazines? What is it you are hoping to achieve for the future?
