Abortion with Utilitarian Point of View Abortion is one of those heavily debated topics in the United States. Millions of women have gone through abortion and the emotional pain and loss for each woman is deep but different. It’s a very sensitive topic in a sense that it discusses a matter of life, morality and legality. Moreover, people who discuss this issue, come from different backgrounds, cultures and locations. Usually when we think of abortion, we think of the two possible sides, pro-life or pro-choice. In order to be able to make an argument, one must fully understand both of sides of the debate. As mentioned in the John Stuart Mill book, Utilitarianism “the Greatest Happiness Principle, holds that actions are right in proportion as they tend to promote happiness, wrong as they tend to produce the reverse of happiness. By happiness is intended pleasure, and the absence of pain; by unhappiness, pain, and the privation of pleasure” (13). In other words, the greatest happiness principle is directly related to the actions outcome and the how much the action produces pleasure and pain. Therefore, based on the contribution to overall pleasure and pain, one can determine whether the action was morally right or wrong. According to Mill, there are higher and lower amount of pleasures and one can only realize the difference between pain and pleasure by experiencing both sides. Mill explains this in his book by saying “It is better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied; better to be Socrates dissatisfied than a fool satisfied. And if the fool, or the pig, are a different opinion, it is because they only know their own side of the question. The other party to the comparison knows both sides” (18). Having said that, it would be hard to think which side Mill would take on abortion since the amount of pleasure resulting from experiencing both sides is
