On August 27, 2016 worker received a letter from Dr. Andrew Duxbury, MD, Mr. Walker’s doctor at the VA Medical Center. The letter stated Mr. Walker has both physical and mental limitations that render him dependent on a third party for care. He is unable to understand normal decisions for daily living and patient’s need for 24-hour care and supervision was discussed with family on June 9, 2016 during home visit.

Currently, the Alvin C. York VA Medical Center utilizes a poorly implemented and poorly designed incentive program. The current inventive program rewards the majority of employees solely based on a yearly evaluation. The terms of the evaluation are set by human resources employees including the criteria for what constitutes an adequate performance level. Ideally, this evaluation rating system should be developed by individual supervisors so that departmental and unit goals can be effectively achieved. The Miami VA hospital has been troubled after the scandal that involved thousands of patients being exposed to the risks of HIV/AIDS and other diseases. The major issue arose on the fact the management in place was not making any progress to deal with the problem. After going through the case study, the hearing on the situation and further research on the internet regarding the Miami VA Hospital, I made several findings that enabled me to come up with the following recommendation to help rejuvenate the hospital.

The patients who come into the ER with shortness of air, chest pains, numbness in the extremities and dizziness with signs of fatigue are ordered an X-ray. My perfect academic path seemed set until October of my Second Year. After Reading Days and about two weeks of ignoring severe pain in my abdomen, I finally went to the UVA Emergency Room. After many tests over the course of the night, doctors revealed the unexpected: at nineteen, I had two 18 cm tumors on each of my ovaries. The shock was almost comical at the time; nevertheless, I had major emergent surgery in Norfolk the next morning. The reporter stated on 08/05/16 at 3:15am, she received a call that a social worker was needed at Prentiss Emergency Room. Ms. Oatis stated when she arrived it was disclosed to her that Messiah had passed. According to the reporter, Mr. Simms made a statement after giving Messiah a bath, he left the restroom to get a dry towel. Management and administrations play a vital role in the success of the workplace and VA system on the whole. With all that has happened, I think that it is safe to say that effective leadership is lacking in more than half of the areas within the VA. It is also my belief that to truly see a significant turnover for the best results, all upper management should either be replaced or undergo some evaluation to find alternative solutions.
